People like Imus and Howard Stern and Jerry Springer portray extremely bad taste and behavior as acceptable and entertaining. Young people and not-so-young people see their popularity and hold them up as standards of humor and entertainment. I'm not for censorship and I'm no prude when it comes to raunchy humor, but these guys (not so much Imus) are considered mainstream, yet they cater to our basest tastes. In my opinion, they demean their audience and they contribute nothing to society.

The public apology is a start. He'll be meeting with the girls, their parents and the university admn shortly for a more personal self admonishment. These girls, not being public figures could easily sue him for his slanderous remarks and win uncontested. He knows it, now. Look for Mr. Imus to end up making a significant contribution to some non-athletic scholarship fund at RU in addition to some community service in the classrooms of RU.
Imus knows he done them wrong, but he is not so ignorant to know he must go beyond mere pennance on the airwaves. Unlike Howard Cosell and others that lost a career from their stupidity, Mr. Imus will be back on the radio.
The player themselves may not be public figures but the team is very public. Imus made some very stupid comments but I have to agree with satiev. I heard someone yesterday say it best "we live in a society where people are looking to get offended". I dont like Imus and I am on board with Spider as to the role he and Howard Stern and other shock jocks play in our media. THe simple fact is, if it had been a black radio host that made those comments about either the rutgers team as is or the white player on the team nobody would give two shits. Cant have it both ways, people should stop getting offended so easily and people should stop and think before they speak. I think Imus should read the book of James in the Bible.
All it did was make Jesse Jackson look important again.
Beyond the black/white thing, Satiev, I was offended that he thought it was OK to call a bunch of women athletes "hos".

Bonnie why would you be offended? Did you feel that his comments were wide ranging and included all female athletes? He did not make any reference to you other than your gender.
IMO, the problem is that Imus takes himself too seriously, and expects others to do so. Howard Stern (or any other comedian) could make those remarks, and people would just say that he was a d*ck for saying it, but he'd get away with it. Imus, who wants to have it both ways, can't say stuff like that.
Also, I would love it if someone on the Rutgers team said something like "Why do I care what Don Imus said?" Can't anyone just say "Who cares?" any more?
