Thread: Hell

  1. #1

    Default Hell

Seems like a lot of religious discussions (not necessarily on this board) involve people going, or not going, to hell. I'm interested in people's views on the subject.

Does hell actually exist? What is it like? What people end up going here?

I realize this is a potentially inflammatory topic (yes, pun intended) but it might also make for good discusson.

Wow, great topic. I struggle with conceptualizing this. I'll flesh it out more later, but I'll say, for now, that while I think some form of Hell exists, I don't necessarily think it's the fiery pits and eternal torture place that has been depicted by most religions.

Hell is listening to other people talk about religion. Or their golf score. Both are at the same level of banality.

There is no heaven, no hell, and nothing after death. If I am wrong (unlikely, but remotely possible), failure to believe in a particular deity or religion won't keep me out of heaven or condemn me to hell if I have led a good and honorable life on earth. I find it quite impossible to believe that there is one right religion and that all pious believers of other religions will be punished in the afterlife for not subscribing to it.

On belief: how does one decide to believe in a particular religion, or any set of beliefs for that matter? It isn't a question of choice. You weigh the evidence and draw conclusions. Either you are convinced or you aren't. It's like saying, "I'm going to decide to like chocolate ice cream." It isn't a choice. Either you like it or you don't.

I don't believe in heaven or hell. And for the fervent believers who think I am going there despite how I have lived my life; I wouldn't want to go to any posited heaven with those folks, nor their version of God. That would be, well....... a version of hell.

In life, there are only two things to worry about: either you are healthy or you are ill.
If you are healthy, there is nothing to worry about.
If you are sick, there are only two things to worry about: either you get well or you die. If you get well there is nothing to worry about.
If you die, there are only two things to worry about: either you go to heaven or hell. If you go to heaven there is nothing to worry about.
If you die, you'll be so damn busy shaking hands with all of your friends you won't have time to worry!

Spider - assuming that you and I are wrong, and there is a god - I am not so sure that your arguement holds. (From here, I speak only of my own brand of athiesm.) I have not merely chosen the "wrong god", I have rejected the concept altogether. I can postulate a god that would be willing to accept the mistaken - but the apostate?

If God exists, would he have such a fragile ego that he would require belief in himself to enter heaven, and would reject those who truly live by his moral standards without accepting him? I was taught in religious school (Hebrew) that man's relation to man is more important than man's relation to God. Isn't the ultimate purpose of religion to help us all get along with one another on earth? Isn't how we live in actuality more important than what we believe spiritually when determining if we deserve our eternal reward? If God feels otherwise, he makes no sense to me and he can keep his heaven.

    wow, interesting comments so far.

FWIW, my own quasi-Christian understanding of hell (and I am by no means certain in this belief).

Does hell actually exist? yes, I think it does. Biblically, hell is called "Gehenna", the garbage dump. It is the trash heap of the universe, so to speak, the place where the evil is placed so it can not contaminate the good.

What is hell like? I have no idea... like Zapp I don't believe in a torture chamber hell becasue it doesn't make sense to me; why would God want to torture people? I imagine hell as being lonely, dark, and sad. I hope, as many early Christians did, that some day God will rescue even those in hell.

Who goes there? Again, I don't know. I don't believe all non-Christians, regardless of circumstance, get sent to hell because that does not make sense to me. I believe only those that deliberately reject God's offer of relationship in heaven are left outside in hell, but I don't know exactly what constitutes "rejecting God" or how that applies to people who believe in God differently (ie Muslims, Jews, Hindus) or those who do not believe in God's existence.
