Thread: greatest baseball player of all time

  1. #1

Default greatest baseball player of all time

With Griffey Jr. hitting 600 yesterday people have started talking about the best players of all time.

In your opinion who is the best baseball player of all time?

    Babe Ruth, hands down.

I would have to go with Mickey Mantle. He was one of the fastest players to play the game and was a hell of a hitter. I would go out on a limb and call him the best pure hitter ever.

Though it is hard to argue against Babe Ruth who was the home run king for years and also threw a no-hitter as a pitcher.

I heard a radio interview with Fay Vincent (who apparently has just written a book about some of the old-timers) last weekend, and he described Mantle as "lightning fast" (I think that was the phrase) and said he could have been even greater but for his alcohol abuse.

the drinking really hurt his career. However it was his knee as well that he hurt I think in the 51 series. I could be wrong but I believe he still has one of the fastest times from home to first and around the bases.

He had a condition called, I believe, osteomyelitis, and he hurt his knee in high school playing football. Vincent suggested this disease was one factor (his father's early death another) in Mantle's "burning the candle at both ends".

He had some problems but i loved growing up and listening to my father tell me stories about him.

I wonder who will we be talking about from today's players 20 - 30 years down the line. A-Rod, Pujols, Webb?

One of my Dad's friends was so enamored of Mantle and the Yankees that he named his son (who was my age) Mickey.

I grew up a Cardinals fan and remain so today.
