Return on investment?
If you had purchased $1000 worth of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have $49.00 today. If you purchased $1000 worth of shares in AIG, you would have $33.00. If you purchased $1000 worth of shares in Lehman Brothers, you would have $0.00 today.
BUT - If you purchased $1000 worth of beer, drank all the beer, and turned the bottles in for recycling, you would have $70.50, and the pleasure of all that beer!
Caveat - I have no idea if these numbers are realistic. I got them from an e-mail from a totally unreliable source and enjoyed them. If you are anal-retentive enough to actually check them out, I would be absolutely enthralled to see the results.

Re: Return on investment?
I'm neither anal retentive enough to check out the figures nor urethral retentive enough to drink the beer.

Re: Return on investment?
It is my understanding that Ben Franklin once said: "Beer is proof that God loves us." How can I argue with a man of such wisdom?

Hangovers are proof that he doesn't love us THAT much.

Nice reply...very witty!
Actual quote from Franklin:
Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards, there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine, a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.

That statement was originally published Oct 2008 after the crash. (if you search the archives here you will find it) In reality, if you had purchased $1000 AIG one year ago, today you would have $1500 on paper.
You could not have bought Lehman Bros, because it went belly up in 2008 and any shares to be had were wallpaper.
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.
