Default London Olympics: General Discussion Thread

So while we're all going to be excited about the wrestling portion of the competition when this starts up (technically it already has with men's and women's soccer) what other events are you guys excited for?

Personally I've always been an Olympics Junkie (really an any even that happens only every few years Junkie) so I'll be interesting in seeing most events.

Specifically though I'll be excited for Bolt v. Blake in the 100 and 200 on the track, Phelps v. Lochte in the pool, and then (in one with a little less publicity) I'll be interested in the two Russians facing off at 105 kilos in men's weightlifting. Akkaev v. Klokov.

    Love rivalries.

I too am an Olympics Junkie. We cut our cable after the 2008 games and I just got DirectTV hooked up specifically for these games. I will watch just about any Olympic event but I'm really interested to watch the distance/middle distance races, along with the field events and the multi-sport events. Our whole family watches the volleyball (gym and beach) along with the crew (my cousin represented the US in Sydney in the 8 women crew boat).

I watch the gymnastics but I've never been a big fan of events where judges decide the outcome, although I do enjoy diving for some reason.

To be honest I'm just incredibly pumped about the games and I'll watch whatever event is on.

I love the olympics so much. My wife does to so it's very nice. Outside of wrestling I always watch gymnastics, swimming, basketball, track and field and diving. But like most I'll watch pretty much anything.

I know what you mean about judges determining outcomes, but I've found they are pretty consistent with the diving/gymnastics.

It's the winter olympics(which I don't really care for as much) that gets more subjective imo.

I've never watched the weight lifting before(though I love lifting). Does America have any decent guys?

Sadly we really don't, we're not very good as a country at weightlifting for a multitude of reasons.

We only qualified one male athlete, Kendrick Farris who lifts at 85 kilos. Kendrick is competitive with the best guys at his weight in the clean and jerk, but his snatch holds him back.

The Chinese will dominate up to at least 77 kilos. 85 is kind of up in the air as to who wins it. The best guy at 94 is Kazakh, 105 should be a showdown between the two Russians, and then 105+ is being carried by two Iranians right now including one who broke Rezazadeh's snatch world record at Worlds last year.

We have two female lifters who could conceivably medal (Sarah Robles and Holley Mangold) both are still kind of longshots as well though.

I kind of felt the same way about my snatch, which ultimately led to my divorce.

I do enjoy watching the Oly's, but it seems like it disappears from my mind as soon as it's over. Other than some very memorable moments, there's not much I recall from previous Oly's. I try to catch the women's beach volleyball, but I feel a little greasy afterward, like I was watching something for the wrong reasons.

I confess to be an Olympic junkie as well. I will watch anything. I like the diving, swimming and gymnastics, but the amount of events they have and the amount of coverage it gets is out of whack. There are way too many swimming events and all of the preliminary heats are shown, same with all the qualifying diving.
I am really looking forward to watching Judo. Even though I have done judo for twetny plus years, I have never seen a high level competition. US has only one medal contender. I also like weightlifting, all the track and field, rowing, bicycling (almost any racing).

I don't think that I've had the same spirit for the Olympics ever since pros started competing in some of the sports, simply because Bobby Knight (I think that was the coach) had a tantrum that we didn't win gold for the first time in many, many years in basketball and, by God, we're never going to lose again. I still say that a top tier college team would STILL beat any pro team that the world has to offer.

Now to hear that golf is going to be doing the same thing, yuck!

I'm kind of on the fence about the pro athletes thing... not too excited about NBA players (and golf pros) being at the Olympics, but I loved the NHL competitions at the Winter Olympics, and I'll be cheering a lot for Roger Federer, one of my favorite non-wrestling athletes, to win a gold medal.

Like many of you guys, I'll watch anything Olympic that's on, but the only events I'll purposely plan to watch are the wrestling events, a Federer final (if he makes it) and probably the men's 100 m final.
