Thread: Recommend a Movie

    Default Recommend a Movie

I rarely watch television but have a few days of downtime, so can you recommend some? All genres considered. I plan to stream Netflicks, Hulu, (like it'll at those sites) but most likely a d/l rental from iTunes.

I watched No Country for Old Men last night. It turned out better than I thought. Pretty graphic violence but a solid show.

So lay some recommendations out here please, everyone profits.

    inglorious Basterds, Quentin Tarantino

Everything you want in a Tarantino move.

Also Syriana, which I just streamed on Netlix the other day. Based on the book called "See No Evil" by Robert Baer. I'm usually anti-Hollywood on any moves that deal with the Middle East, because I think they take the pro-Palestinian side of the argument, but Syriana really made me think about both sides of the argument. I don't think the move really made any money, but it's definitely worth seeing.

I loved the entire ensemble series:
    - This Is Spinal Tap
    - Waiting For Guffman
    - Best In Show
    - A Mighty Wind (possibly my favorite comedy of all time with hilarious original songs - I own the soundtrack)
    - For Your Consideration (the weakest of the series)

    Two good baseball films
    - Bang The Drum Slowly (featuring a young Robert DeNiro)
    - Long Gone - sexy & funny (Teller of Penn & Teller has a speaking role)

    Also:
Shawshank Redemption - excellent prison story
    Airplane - comedy
    Blazing Saddles - comedy
The Commitments - great music & good story. I own the soundtrack of this one, too.
Rainman - good story, great acting by Dustin Hoffman
Body Heat - sexy film noir murder mystery with a young Mickey Rourke in a small role.

Just about any George Clooney film of the past few years:
Ocean's Eleven (all good ensemble pieces)
Solaris (if you like off-beat Sci Fi this is the one, love it)
    Ocean's Twelve
Good Night, Good Luck (the life of journalist Edward Murrow)
Syriana, (one of the best political films ever made)
    Ocean's Thirteen
Michael Clayton (A lawyer who has an ethical crisis)
    Leatherheads (Comedy about Pre-NFL football)
Up in the Air (another piece about ethics & choices)
    The American (Spy-thriller double cross)
The Ides of March (Dirty Politics)

    The Matrix series
    Fight Club
Spy Game (Brad Pitt & Robert Redford)
    Moneyball (Brad Pitt, Baseball film)

I am assuming you've seen and have full appreciation of Smokey and the Bandit 1&2 and both Cannonball Runs. I don't watch too many newer movies but of the past few years, here are the ones I recommend.

    Napolean Dynomite
    Juno
    Hangover
    Muppets
    Kick Ass
    Four Brothers
    The Fighter
    Lemmy

Ha ha!! I also like Clint Eastwood westerns and old kung fu movies. I figure life in general is real enough, why not escape it for a couple of hours of thoughtless entertainment. I have been known to watch Bob Ross marathons on PBS too.
