Guiness is definitely an acquired taste. I can only described a pint of LIQUID PUMPERNICKEL. I can usually only handle one pint. I have Scowcer friends (Folk from Liverpool) who swallow 10 pints in an evening as standard fare. I can't even imagine.

I find it easier to drink mass quantities of Guinness rather than most other beers.

If you like pumpkin flavor, you'll like Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale. I've tried several pumpkin flavored beers, and they've all been pretty crappy except this one. I also like most of the Sam Adams beers, but I'm originally from Boston.

Has anyone tried a beer called Mississippi Mud? It comes in what looks like a smaller version of an old moonshine bottle. I haven't tried it, was wondering if it's any good.

After reading through your list I'm pretty certain we could belly up to the bar with the same glasses of beer. I'm going to have to look into a few of your recommendations. BevMo tends to carry some semi-obscure stuff, so I'll start there.

Here's a few to keep an eye out for

Hofbrau - imported direct from the Hofbrau House Brewery, Munich - excellent - but if you're lucky enough to find it, they'll only have a few 6 packs in the rack.

Ommegang - Three Philosophers - Belgian by recipe but produced in upstate New York. They have 5 or 6 regular brews and some limited editions each season.

Spaten Optimator - a dark German from a 600 year old brew house, hint of malt flavor.

Chimay Blue Label - 25 oz bottle Red or Blue label. These are true Belgian Trappist brews. Red Label is an amber with a hint of apricot. Chimay Blue Label is my preference. A tad of raisin in the aroma, not bitter at all. A very dark brew almost black.

Stella is a very good mass produced light amber Belgian at a lower price.

Ah the Hofbrau haus, I have been there & the TENT at Oktoberfest. Yes worth trying.

Optimator...I have a few horror stories of drinking that in Deutschland with my brother while he was on tour. YIKES.

Chimay makes definitely some interesting stuff. I have found that I have to be willing to spend the money something I may not be able to stomach more than 2 gulps of but other stuff is like a rich hearty wine. It is sort not even beer anymore but the trappists are their own universe of create on alcoholic beverages.

Yes Guiness is like its own cult. I find that usually guiness drinkers don't like what I do but that's fine. A pint for me is worth it once in awhile. Sort of like the Olympics. I understand though that some folks, of Celtic persuasion, swear on it to be weaned on, as much as their mother's own breast milk if not more so....
