What Are You Reading? TWT Book Discussion

This is a bit off-topic but any of you who love film as much as I do I would suggest checking out HUGO. It was NOT what I expected. I thought it was a kid's film, (though you can definitely bring your kids) with lots of CGI etc. And though the special effects are great, they are more along the line of creating fantastic environments then they are action sequences.

And if you enjoy history, especially the lessen known nooks & crannies this is for you as well. Without ruining it let's just say it unexpectedly gives you the birth of the art of film in the heart of turn of the century Paris in the context that allows you to fully appreciate its genesis for it's true beauty & creativity. And you learn somethings as well which I always enjoy.

It is a Marty Scorsese film (he appears in it for a second a la Hitchcock). You get the feeling that he has waited his whole career to tell this story. Being a consummate film maker himself he treats it like he is bringing a beloved book to life, (hence why I posted this here).

It stars 2 great kids plus Ben Kingsley, Jude Law, Christopher Lee & Sacha Cohen, (in a surprisingly well done comedic/dramatic role), as well as a few Harry Potter character actors floating around here & there. Enjoy, as it is a "good read" & an adventure...

I haven't started either book yet, but I got Rockers and Rollers, which is the story of AC/DC singer Brian Johnson. It got good reviews on That Metal Show as a fun book to read with no bitching or moaning.

I also got My Appetite for Destruction, which is the Stephan Adler (GnR's original drummer) autobiography. It got really good reviews on Amazon as a good tell all. I am looking forward to reading both but haven't had time yet.

I just started World War Z by Max Brooks

I finished Toaster Project by Thomas Thwaites who is a student in the UK who tries to make a simple toaster from scratch. He goes as far as going to an abandonned iron mine, digging some ore, and trying to smelt iron. A very amusing book that can be finished in a day or so. I thought it gave a good perspective of the complexity of everyday things and the technology it takes to mass produce them. He also laid out a very good environmental philosophy that made a lot sense to me.

Now I am reading The Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears. It is a historical fiction is set in 17th century England and One of the main storylines is about "doctors" starting to use a scientific method and the resistance they are encountering from "scholars" who think that all there is to know is contained in ancient texts. I find the attitudes of the "anti-science" characters would fit nicely in some of the debates our society is having today.

Finally got enough time to read My Appetite for Destruction by Steven Adler (original Guns n Roses drummer). Easy read and a real tell all. I don't know who's story was more shocking, his or Nikki Sixx's in Heroine Diaries. Either way, if you are a fan of rock n roll autobiographies, you'd enjoy this. You can read it in a day or two.
