    Default GSP Olympic aspirations

A really good article written by a Canadian wrestler/fighter about the difficulties GSP would face if he decided to try out for the olympics.

Good article and good breakdown of what it takes.
I have heard MMA fans say that GSP has been asked to be on both the Canadian Judo and Wrestling.

It makes no sense for GSP, who is trying to become the greatest of all time in his sport and has a good chance to do so, to dedicate the necessary time and effort to become an excellent wrestler in Canada who is a long shot for the Olympic team and does not have a chance at a medal.

I think those MMA fans are making stuff up. Some Canada wrestling people might want him to try out because of the exposure the sport will get, but no one would hand GSP a national team spot. He would need to win it at 74 or 84.

I suspect that GSP will not try out for the Olympics because of the reasons ODH mentions. The Canadian nationals, which seeds the top 3 on a "ladder" for the olympic trials, is in a couple of weeks, I bet st. Pierre is not competing.

I have had this discussion with many of my MMA friends. Those who are wrestlers laugh it off. Those who have never wrestled are the ones who seem to believe he can make it. I compete in judo with grown men who have laughed off the importance of a sprawl. I guess it looks easy to non-wrestlers. But those same people can't seem to sprawl good enough to keep me from taking them down when we use wrestling rules. So, to them, GSP's wrestling looks unstoppable. That article shows why it works in MMA and may not work in wrestling.

But, him just trying out or even competing in a tournament would bring exposure to the sport. Heck, him just going on tv and suggesting that people go watch it would be great!! The dude can definitely get people watching and possibly get more companies to contribute money to support it.

I don't think, I know they are completely misinformed.
Their world revolves around watching MMA and have no clue about Olympic sports.

not that i think he could compete at a national level anyway, but which weight would he go?

he fights 170 and apparently pulls hard to make it. 7 more is a bit much. if he could wrestle at 185 he'd fight there. we all know that's not gonna happen.

I'm guessing 84 kg. In addition to the difficulties in making 74, it is currently considered the deeper weight class in Canada. One of St. Pierre's wrestling coaches, Cleo Ncube, wrestles at 74 and placed 2nd at this weeks' nationals. St Pierre did not compete.
