Former UI champ to fight at casino
Former Iowa wrestler Eric Juergens will compete Saturday night in an ultimate fighting event, Extreme Challenge 83, at Riverside Casino & Golf Resort.
Juergens, a two-time national champion at Iowa who finished his career with a 120-13 record, will fight Justin Shipman of Oskaloosa in a 145-pound match. Juergens, who is competing for just the second time in the sport, is 1-0, while Shipman is 2-2.
"Right now, I'm having fun with it. It's a great sport and something that fits well into what I do best," Juergens said.
Juergens was a four-time state champion and undefeated wrestler at Maquoketa High School. He now lives in Davenport.
"I don't really consider myself a mixed martial artist," Juergens said. "When people call me that I kind of laugh because I have so much to learn. There is so much more to this sport than many people realize. Some think it's brutal, but it's not. It's about technique, the details and capitalizing on what you do best. I feel calm in there. I used to always get nervous wrestling at Iowa, but for some reason in the cage I don't. It makes me nervous because of how calm I am."
Tickets range from $35 to $120 and can be purchased through the casino. The show begins at 7 p.m.
