The rumored fight between Frank Mir and Brendan Schaub seems to be off. Sportsnet.ca has reported that Schaub will be facing Stefan Struve in March 2011.
Schaub had requested a fight against Mir in October of this year, telling MMAWeekly radio, “I’m such a fan of Frank Mir and he poses such huge threats to me. I’m trying to get better and the only way to get better is knowing that I have to fight a guy like Frank Mir. That’s the reason. Frank Mir is an absolute nightmare, stud jiu-jitsu guy and southpaw.”
Sherdog offered more on the story, revealing that the fight between Schaub and Struve was not yet named to any UFC card for March. The bout could potentially be on one of three cards: the March 3rd card on Versus, UFC 128 on March 19th or UFC Fight Night 24 on March 26th.
Schaub has gone 3-0 since his loss to Roy Nelson during The Ultimate Fighter Season 10 Finale, while Struve is on a two-fight winning streak since losing to Nelson in March.
The move seems to indicate one of three scenarios. 1) Mir could be hurt; 2) the UFC did not like the Mir vs. Schaub fight for some reason; and 3) Mir will be coaching The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 opposite Brock Lesnar.
The Lesnar and Mir coaching scenario has been bandied about for some time and with this announcement those rumours will once again heat up.
