Will Ribeiro Fundraiser at Toronto BJJ a Huge Success
“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”—John Wesley
Prior to the much anticipated UFC 123 event this past Saturday night, which featured the main event matchup between Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Black House member, Lyoto “the Dragon” Machida, members of the Toronto Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy were all in attendance with the specific goal of raising money for former WEC fighter, Will Ribeiro.
At the fundraiser, Ribeiro’s close friend, Professor Jorge Britto (a Saulo Ribeiro Black Belt), demonstrated his superior Jiu-Jitsu skills for all students willing to support the cause.
In case you are unaware, WEC Bantamweight fighter, Will Ribeiro (MMA record 9-2), is still struggling to make progress as he attempts to battle back from a life-threatening motorcycle accident, dating back to December 2008. Ribeiro was critically injured while riding a motorcycle on rain-slick roads, which resulted in the partial paralysis of the left side of his body.
Amazingly, after spending months in a coma, Ribeiro woke with no significant brain damage. He can think, speak and joke around just as he could before the accident. It’s really quite remarkable when you consider the extent of his injuries (a major portion of Ribeiro’s skull is missing on the right side of his head).
Ribeiro was an absolutely amazing athlete, and it is very likely that his superior physical condition is what had helped to save his life.
This young man is a warrior in every sense of the word, and with the help of his brother Wladmir (who does everything for Will in order to ensure his survival) and two younger sisters, Will is doing everything that he can to walk again and regain a life that seems greatly affected by the prejudice of the handicapped in Brazil.
The fundraiser was to help Ribeiro with his physical therapy and emotional rehabilitation. He is obviously quite affected by his new life, and unfortunately, he has not been able to receive any treatments for quite some time.
This man of inspiration has no additional money or support in order to receive any treatments, medications, surgeries or even transportation to get around.
Quite obviously, Will Ribeiro needs all the help that he can get right now, and as a proud member of the MMA community, it’s really fantastic that Toronto BJJ and Prof. Jorge Britto stepped up to answer the call for help.
On behalf of Will and his family—I thank you all for your efforts.
Wondering How You Can Lend a Hand?
If anyone would like to make a badly needed donation ($5, $10, $20), you can send money through PayPal to Will’s brother or James Ryan.
Or, as another suggestion—PLEASE share Will’s story with as many people as you can.
You don’t have to be a fan of MMA to appreciate and admire the strength and determination of this young man. The more we can use social media to help spread the word about Will and his challenges—the better.
I know that many of you (if not all of you) have your own set of problems at home to contend with, but please remember—the benefit of helping others is that it makes YOU feel good about yourself because you know that you have done something good for someone else. It’s called “karma” folks, and there’s nothing wrong with banking some of it for down the road.
After all—you never know what life may throw at you.
Just ask Will.
