Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir III- Why It's the Right Fight and the Wrong Fight
This past weekend, while in Germany for UFC 122, UFC president Dana White held a Q & A session with the German fans. The question of a third fight between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir was brought up. White replied that the fight "makes sense" as the next fight for both guys.
The backlash brought on by fans throughout the internet and on Twitter caused White to change his stance on the possibility of a third fight being next for both men.
Fans often get too involved in the sports side of MMA, and all sports generally, and lose sight that this is also a business, and sometimes business decisions have to be made because it's simply the right thing to do.
A third fight at this stage between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir is the right thing to do for business, but the wrong thing to do in the interest of fans. Personally, I'm interested in seeing a third fight between them, but not at this stage, as both have other options right now available to them.
Lesnar needs to be in the title picture. While a win over Mir would put him back in it, with the way Cain Velasquez defeated Lesnar at UFC 121 in October, Lesnar should need more than one win to get a crack at challenging Velasquez for the title.
I would match Lesnar up with Cheick Kongo next. It's a fight where Lesnar would be challenged to see if he has improved on his stand-up, but Kongo's takedown defense isn't super, so Lesnar could use his strengths to take Kongo down, and would likely win the fight.
Mir, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing win over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 119 in Indianapolis. Mir's performance in that fight shouldn't reward him with a fight against Lesnar. I would match Mir with Brendan Schaub next, with the hopes of a Mir win, but a Schaub win would move him up a level.
A Lesnar vs. Mir fight with both coming off of a win could easily be sold as a fight to determine the next contender for the heavyweight title, and that added stigma would not only help the business side, but the pure sports side as well. Their second fight had the dynamic of the title being on the line, and as big as that fight ended up being, I feel the title being on the line helped it even more, and a third fight between them, whether a title fight or a title shot on the line fight would help it even more.
A third fight between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir right now would be the best thing for business, and would draw huge and do a great buyrate and the build-up would be tremendous, but right now is the wrong time for the fight. Give it a year, and see where both guys are then, and then give it another look.
