Default My son is new to wrestling, and I have some basic questions.

My 6 year old joined wrestling at our local rec dept this year, and he really seems to enjoy it as an extra gym class. From a parents standpoint, it's nice that he goes to sleep at a decent hour twice a week.

This wrestling club has tons of kids in the beginner class and not many coaches, so I try to help out where I can. The problem it that I don't know much about wrestling. I am looking for a bit of direction here. Normally I would pick up some knowledge on unfamiliar topics by watching videos, but when I search "wrestling" I get a bunch of info on weight lifters that wear costumes.

So far it seems that Dan Gable's DVD's would be a good investment, but I really don't know. What would you suggest for teaching the basics?

Also, he wrestled in a tournament a couple weeks ago. He lost the first 2 matches by a point or two, and got pinned in the 3rd match. I don't think that's too bad for a kid that has been wrestling for less then a month. An issue that came up though was his head gear. It seemed to choke him a bit and I could see it was a distraction. Are there any brands or types that are better/more comfortable then others? If this is something he sticks with, I think good quality head gear would be worth the investment.

I am sure I will have more questions, but I'll start there.

    Thanks!

    Bobby

Thanks! That is exactly what I am looking for.

    Any suggestions/feedback on head gear?

    Thanks again!

All headgear does fine. With a 6 year old dont worry too much as long as he has a pair. He will grow out of them. I like all cliff keen headgear personally. I have a kolat.com subsctiption and ive always felt that he does such a good job that he could take someonewho didnt know the sport and teach all tue basics and then some.
    Go Hawkeyes.
