Parkland senior Mike Ottinger upset the nation?s top-ranked high school wrestler at 152 pounds, launching Team Pennsylvania to victory Sunday at the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic.

Ottinger scored a 6-4 decision over five-time Minnesota state champ Destin McCauley (No. 1 @ 152) in the opening bout of Sunday?s 37th annual all-star match at the University of Pittsburgh. Team Pennsylvania, composed of senior wrestlers from around the state, went on to defeat Team USA 27-18. Team USA consisted of 13 wrestlers from eight states, 10 of whom were ranked No. 1 in their weight classes nationally by Intermat.

Tamaqua?s Garth Lakitsky added a victory at 215 pounds, where opponent Andrew Campolattano of New Jersey took an injury default. And in a bout between Intermat?s top two wrestlers at 130 pounds, Nazareth?s Zach Horan fell 8-3 to Jesse Thielke of Wisconsin.

In the opening bout of the evening, Ottinger scored his second consecutive upset. Two weeks ago, the unranked Ottinger defeated Pittsburgh Central Catholic?s Jason Luster (No. 8 @ 160) 2-1 for the PIAA 3A title at 160 pounds.

So McCauley was reportedly at about 148 and Ottinger was at 160 this year and coming off a defeat of the #8 kid in the country?

As a Badgers fan, that certainly softens the blow for me...at least a little bit. I still think the top 52 pounder in the country should be able to pull that one out despite some disadvantages, but not the shocking loss it looked like a few days ago.

McCauley looked like he didn't even care about winning that match, for the #1 overall recruit in the country, that was pretty bad. I'm sure he'll do really well in college though, especially at Wisconsin w Pritzlaff and Frayer.

I heard he was getting down to 66 kilos for freestyle. Still think he should have taken Ottinger, but it is a meaningless match with horrible way in rules.

Well, it's just hearsay, but I'd heard in my neck of the woods he was cutting down to 45.5 and he was weighing 148.
