The Arrowhead Warhawks, led by the shocking performance of senior Shane Hughes, have made sure their coach, John Mesenbrink, leaves his position with memories that will last a lifetime.

Hughes led a contingent of four Arrowhead wrestlers into the Division 1 finals during the semifinal round of the WIAA state individual wrestling tournament Friday night at the Kohl Center.

Mesenbrink?s impending retirement and Hughes? teammate, 140-pound senior sensation Jake Sueflohn (No. 3 @ 140), may have been the story heading into the tournament, but Hughes was the story of the day after he posted a come-from-behind pin of Wisconsin Rapids junior Devin Peterson (No. 2 @ 189) in one semifinal at 189 pounds in the most shocking upset of the tournament.

Hughes trailed Peterson, undefeated at the time with a 49-0 record with 39 pins on the season and 102 for his career, by a 12-3 margin at the 3-minute 15-second mark of the match. The two got caught in a scramble on their knees; Hughes threw a tight headlock on Peterson and pulled Peterson over and put him to his back.

Peterson appeared to roll through, but Hughes held the headlock tight and pulled Peterson over again for the last time, registering the pin at 3:01. The crowd went crazy, and Hughes put his hands up in disbelief.
