Whats your criteria??
I'm just curious as to what the criteria is, at the school you wrestle/coach at, for recieving a Varsity Letter. At our school its:
-80% Practice Attendance or higher
-Maintaining Academic Eligibility throughout the ENTiRE season
-Participation in 4 Varsity tournaments or winning 10 Varsity Matches
-Demonstrating a Positive Attitude throughout the season
-Honoring and showing respect to the school, coaches, teammates. and parents.
Whats your teams criteria for earning a Varsity Letter??

Lettering isn't a big deal at our school. Unfortunately.
I like your criteria but would make 2 changes...
-Participation in 10 Varsity Matches (win or lose)
-All graduating seniors who where on the team throughout high school

I agree.

Re: Whats your criteria??
-100% Practice Attendance, excluding absense for illness and coaches permission to miss
-18 team points
- 4 year seniors not meeting the above
-Not maintaining school and team code of conduct gets you booted and consequently no letter, includes maintaining Academic Eligibility throughout the ENTiRE season
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

Re: Whats your criteria??
For me it was
-Earning 6 team points.
Yeah that was it, I got it in my first match.

Re: Whats your criteria??
The school that I coach at you basically need to wrestle over 50% of the matches varsity matches. Winning or losing does not factor into it at all and as far as grades go, if you maintain eligibility you are fine. If you lose eligibility at anytime, no letter.

Re: Whats your criteria??
This our teams requirements:
TO BE CONSIDERED AS A VARSITY LETTERMAN ON THE COLLEGE PARK WRESTLING
TEAM YOU MUST FULFILL ALL OF THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW DURING THE
COURSE OF A SEASON. AFTER ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE MET THE FINAL DECISION WILL
BE UP TO THE DISCRETION OF THE FALCON WRESTLING COACHING STAFF.
1. THE WRESTLER MUST EARN 15 VARSITY WRESTLING POINTS.
*WRESTLING IN A VARSITY MATCH??.....1 VARSITY POINT
*WINNING A VARSITY MATCH?????.....2 VARSITY POINTS
*WINNING BY PIN IN A VARSITY MATCH?..3 VARSITY POINTS
*MATCHES ARE NOT COUNTED TWICE. A MATCH WILL EARN 1, 2, OR 3 POINTS ONLY.
2. THE WRESTLER MAY NOT MISS MORE THAN 4 PRACTICE SESSIONS OR SCHEDULED
COMPETITIONS DURING THE SEASON. ARRIVING LATE TO PRACTICE WILL COUNT
AS ? OF AN ABSENCE. EXCUSED ABSENCES AND TARDIES MAY BE MADE UP AT
THE COACHES DISCRETION.
3. THE WRESTLER MUST MAINTAIN AT LEAST A MINIMUM 2.0 GPA FOR THE ENTIRE
SEASON.
4. THE WRESTLER MUST CONDUCT THEMSELVES IN THE TRADITION OF COURAGE,
PRIDE, HONOR, SACRIFICE. DISCIPLINARY ACTION TAKEN DURING SCHOOL,
COMPETITIONS, OR PRACTICE MAY RESULT IN THE FORFEITURE OF LETTERMAN
STATUS.
* I am pretty sure the team itself voted on a minimum of 90% attendance (which is like 2 missed practices max).

Re: Whats your criteria??
This goes with a thread I saw on another forum: then and now, which is better?
I came down on the now side, but here is an example of the differences between then and now.
The starter of this thread said that a letter winner had to attend 80% of the practices.
When I was a kid, one of our best kids cut one practice (a returning sectional champ). He was required to apologize to the entire team and sit out the next dual meet, with the understanding that one more missed practice would mean being cut from the team.
We always had 3-4 guys ready to take somebody's place because our teams were so big.

Re: Whats your criteria??
I think you put the best guy at each weight and thats the only criteria...if he makes the team for the majority of the matches at the weight...he's on the team
