Track and Field you can send up to three per event if they meet a minimum qualifying time. It is not unusual to see the US sweep all the medals for some sprints.

Track and field is a racist sport. Mostly black guys win the sprints.

Re: Might as well call it Russian Nationals at 74 at Olympics
Notice how the medal maker sports such as track and swimming always favor USA. America has black people whereas Eastern Europe and Asia do not. America also has lots of resources required to maintain swimming pools whereas many countries do not have as much money.
So we see dozen sprinting events and dozens American black sprinters as well as numerous swimming events.

Re: Might as well call it Russian Nationals at 74 at Olympics
Just for fun:
America won 103 medals at Olympics in 2004
Track and field and swimming accounted for 53 medals out of 103 or more than half.
20 Gold 21 Silver and 12 Bronze
United States 35 39 29 103
Russia 27 27 38 92
Russia won 92 medals but only 21 from track and field and swimming
So take away track and swimming and USA won 50 medals whereas Russia won 71 medals in other sports. So seems to me Russia is a better sports country overall.

Silly analysis. If you take away the Olympic sports that the US is really good, Russia is better at the remaining sports. Not to mention you are not counting football the most popular sport in the US.

Re: Might as well call it Russian Nationals at 74 at Olympics
The analysis is not silly at all. Its not that US is really good at 2 sports but that you can potentially earn more medals in these two sports than in 40 other sports combined.
Russia earns more medals than US out of 40 sports. America earns more medals in 2 sports than in 40 other sports. What a terrible achievement!
Do you really think it is easier to win Olympics in wrestling than to win 8 medals in all kinds of swimming? Why 1 medal vs 8?
Why in addition to a Gold medal for winning your weight in wrestling you don't also get a medal for the best throw, the most takedowns, the least points scored on you and so on?
