We're one week out from figuring out who will be on our World Teams. Had a lot of turn over in terms of guys either not competing or guys getting beat out from the World Teams last year so it should be interesting to see how things shake out.

The athletes listed below are our US Nationals champions and will have a bye into the final three match series, at least I think they will. The rules on that always confuse me.

    Freestyle
55 KG: Obe Blanc (Gator WC)
60 KG: Shawn Bunch (Gator WC)
66 KG: Jared Frayer (Gator WC)
    74 KG: Andrew Howe (NYAC)
    84 KG: Jake Herbert (NYAC)
    96 KG: JD Bergman (NYAC)
    120 KG: Les Sigman (NLWC)

    Greco
    55 KG: Spenser Mango (NYAC)
60 KG: Nathan Piasecki (US Army)
66 KG: Glenn Garrison (US Army)
    74 KG: Jake Fisher (NYAC)
    84 KG: Cheney Haight (NYAC)
    96 KG: Justin Ruiz (NYAC)
    120 KG: Brandon Rupp (NYAC)

    Women's
48 KG: Alyssa Lampe (Sunkist Kids)
51 KG: Jessica Medina (Sunkist Kids)
55 KG: Tatianna Padilla (Sunkist Kids)
59 KG: Kelsey Campbell (Sunkist Kids)
63 KG: Elena Pirozhkova (Gator WC)
67 KG: Erin Clodgo (Sunkist Kids)
72 KG: Stephany Lee (Sunkist Kids)

Predictions: Howe loses to Askren, Sigman loses to Dlagnev, rest of #1 seeds in freestyle make the team.

I beat Obe Blanc really hopes Simmons isn't the one who makes it out of the mini tournament.

With Felix seemingly having Simmons' number it'll be really interesting to see how things wind up getting seeded in the mini at 55 kg.

I'm strongly considering driving out to Iowa to see this. Realistically, it's not going to happen though since I have a skinny wallet and would have to be back by Sunday for graduation. Here are my thoughts on the winners. Perhaps I'll add a little more later.

55 kg: The mini tournament seems pretty wide open. I'll go with Blanc since he's the only sure finalist and has blanked everyone (but Simmons) lately.

60 kg: Tough to go against Bunch after the way he handled Zadick at the US Open. Chances are that will be the finals match, but maybe a guy like Scott or Humphrey will squeak in.

66 kg: Frayer seems like a good bet here with Trent Paulson up a weight. I'd love to see Jaggers pull it together and have a good performance.

74 kg: Howe looked very good, but not unbeatable here. I do think he will probably be stronger against the Paulson's this time around though. I'll pick him to win it, with Askren being a very big wildcard. I also think Poeta could make the finals.

    84 kg: Herbert.

96 kg: Bergman. I'm sure Varner will come in with a much better game plan this time around, but it's sort of hard to imagine he will close the gap between him and Bergman in such a short time. I think the only way he wins this is by taking periods to the clinch.

120 kg: This weight class alone would almost make it worth the trip to Iowa. Mocco, Dlagnev, Rowlands battle it out to face Sigman. I'll pick Dlagnev to win the tourney, but the minitourney should be a doozy. I'll take whoever wins it to beat Sigman.

Mocco won't be competing anymore this year due to injury is the word.

Interesting. I'm still eager to see how Sigman/Dlagnev/Rowlands plays out this time around.

Any guys to watch in greco for entertaining bouts? I'm sure the US team will be composed of very good wrestlers, but since Dantzler and Lester are gone there doesnt' seem to be any real big throwers.

I think I remember hearing that UNI gave Schwab its blessing to give it one lost shot this year, and he will retire afterwards. I actually think Metcalf will make it out of the mini-tourament, with a decent shot at Frayer.
