Thread: University Nationals

    Default University Nationals

Figured it needed it's own thread instead of using the Changing Weights thread. Reece Humphrey wins at 63kg despite never wrestling (or practicing!) Greco. Article here:

And obviously the results are a testament to how successful the USOEC program has become.

Humphrey was also the greco OW--he was only scored upon in 1 period the whole tournament. He has now pinned his first 2 opponents in freestyle, too. He's not wrestling at one of the Sr. level weights though--I don't know if that makes it weaker or not.

That's nice for Mr. Humphrey.........BUT.........what is far more interesting to me is who his opponent was in the finals. That being Boise State's redshirt Freshman Josh Strait (former HS Senior National runner-up in 2005).

Strait was a "true" freshman at Boise State last season after returning from his LDS church mission (that lasted two years) He was redshirted last season at 133 lbs behind Andrew Hochstrasser.

I wonder why Humphrey didn't go 60 kg. The article on themat says he plans on competing at 60 kg after he graduates. Maybe he didn't want to have to make it 2 days in a row for greco and free.

That would be my assumption (not wanting to cut for two days in a row).

In case you're curious, Mizzou had 13 guys registered, but only Brent Haynes and Jake Glore flew out Wed for Greco. The other 11 guys got stranded when their plane got cancelled. That sux!
