Also, the wrestler must meet this...
The Olympic redshirt criteria includes current athletes who are:
• A past Senior World or Olympic Team member; or
• A top eight finisher at the 2011 Senior World Team Trials; or
• A top three finisher at the NCAA Championships and a top two finisher at the University National Championships.
Used to be easy to get an OLY, just ask. That's no longer the case.

Now THAT was a change that was drastically needed. I almost came to hate Olympic years, simply because everyone, their dog, and every third string back up were sitting out for Olympic years, all the while having zero chance of making the team.

Central Michigan had a few that were pretty ridiculous. DiSalvo got an Olympic year, I want to say either Jason Borrelli and/or Luke Smith got them as well.
While Pataky was never out of this world in folk he was always solid as a freestyler.

As a general wrestling fan first, and PSU fan immediately after, I share my thoughts on Brad Pataky:
Excellent guy - I wish the best for him in life.
Good, but never elite college wrestler.
Olympic Ability - especially after his knees started going? Nothing about him said olympic qualifier.
Honestly, I viewed his redshirting as almost a mormon mission equivalent to continue wrestling into his mid 20's.

Didn't Pataky have a crazy run early the Olympic year where he pinned a bunch of top guys with headlock throws- or something like that? Maybe I'm just making this up and I'm too lazy to search for it but I thought I remember something like that.
