Jordan Burroughs(2009) vs Kyle Dake(2012)

I see it panning out like this. Burroughs with an early takedown. But Dake surprises him with a reversal and he rides out the last minute and a half of the period. The ride wears on Burroughs and he is now a half step slower. The reversal gets in his head and he now thinks his only option is to take Dake down and let him up.

Burroughs chooses neutral in 2nd. With his shot being a tad slower, Dake is able to sprawl. Dake attempts a few shots to keep from getting a warning. 2-2 at the end of 2.

Dake chooses down in the third and Burroughs cuts him. But now Burroughs knows he's essentially down by 2 and a takedown will only tie and he also knows he can't hold Dake down. So he panics and takes a bad shot. Dake spins behind and rides out the third. 6-2 Dake.

So dake beats national champ burroughs worse than he could beat Derek St. john? Call me skeptical.

We are speculating on Burroughs in 2009. Not now. I agree it would be silly given his obvious improvement over the last three years.

Believe me, I know which Burroughs you're talking about. The jump he made from Soph to Jr. year was amazing. He was darn good in 2008 placing third in the toughest weight of all time. He would have smoked Metcalf/Caldwell if they were at 157 they next year. He was awesome that whole season. Beat some monsters with ease.

I seem to remember having a super extensive argument with someone (possibly you) that Burroughs in 2009 had improved tremendously and would destroy metcalf in a rematch. I was told that was ridiculous because Metcalf had beaten him several times and was clearly the superior wrestler

im gonna be honest with you i wasnt even thinking of the 2008 season when they ended up having like all that guys that made all-american eventually become a national champ and i wasnt even thinkin about the fact that burroughs was apart of that. i was actually underestimating jb. when i go back and think about the guys jordan beat and how easily he beat them i actually agree that i dont think dake would beat him by any means. i do think that for the first period it would be interesting and half of the 2nd period would be fun to watch but then dake would just gas and burroughs would just continue to put it on him. i say it ends up being a 10-5 or 9-4 match.

The wrestlers competing in 2008 at 149 ended with a total of 31 American honors and 8 national titles.

9 of the wrestlers that competed in that weight class wrestled for a national title at some point in their career. (In other words, there were more national finalists then all american spots)

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a weight class with a better top 3 or 4 wrestlers someday, or a weight class that leads to wrestlers with more international succuess. But as far as sheer depth in folkstyle I don't think 2008 149 will ever be matched again.

Pretty sure I came around after he slaughtered 57 that year, but I will admit being reluctant to consider Metcalf anything but immortal.

Agreed! An awesome weight class that year. Hard to see it being matched.
