NC State hires Popolizio

I wanted to be the first to let you know that I resigned as Head Wrestling Coach of Binghamton University. I will be taking over at North Carolina State University.


The last six years have been, by far, the most exciting and rewarding in my life and I am very thankful for all of the support that everyone associated with this program has given. When I came to Binghamton I knew very little about the Binghamton University Wrestling Program, but throughout the last several years I have had the fortune of being connected with some of the most amazing alumni that a program could ever ask for. The success of the Binghamton University Wrestling Program is a direct effect of the dedication and support of our many alumni and former coaches, Steve Erber, Mark Gumble, and Mike Fusilli.


With the current student-athletes and the new administration, I am confident that Binghamton's future remains bright. The new Athletic Director, Pat Elliott, showed his support and devotion by attending and cheering on the Bearcats at the NCAA tournament this year. Ed Scott, the Associate Director of Athletics for Student Services, will be supervising the wrestling program next year and I believe in his and Pat's abilities to continue the success of this program.

I cannot thank you all enough for your support and dedication to the sport of wrestling and Binghamton University-- you are inspirational!

There has to be something I don't see that makes NC State a better job. It will be interesting to see what sort of recruits he lands now.

NC st has a biggee athletic dept, nicer facilities, nicer weather, and I believe he thinks he will recruit NY just as well from Raleigh.

Academically he can get a wider number of kids into the school at nc state. Theres more talent down south than you might realize as well. I initially wondered a lot of this as well, but the more Ive thought the more Ive come to that conclusion.

Absolutely, no disrespect to Binghamton but definitely a step up.

Technically I wrestled in the south but I have always been skeptical of the attention the area has been recieving lately. The top level kids are gonna be good no matter where they come from (although I have a few choice words for kids coming out of Texas which I have mentioned before). But when it comes to your basic "upper level" wrestler you are still gonna come out better grabbing a kid from PA, Iowa, Ohio, etc as oppossed to getting your run of the mill high level state placer from Florida, Georgia, or North Carolina. A good friend of mine is a state runner up from Florida and he is beaten by guys who didn't even place in Ohio or PA. But if Pop is still able to recruit from the northeast coupled with the tools he has at NC State then he could possibly turn them into a Top 10 program which would really help wrestling in the south.
