Thread: NCAA Wrestling Lineage Tree

    Default NCAA Wrestling Lineage Tree

The Wrestling Lineage Tree ( wrestlingtree.com ) traces the history of NCAA Wrestler's instructors (head coach where they got their undergraduate degree) with a focus on Wrestlers who are involved in the Olympics or MMA. From it you can see how much of an influence Wrestlers have on MMA/UFC and the Martial Arts world. (clicking on the wrestler's name will have links and information to official websites, etc)

The interesting thing is about 70% of Wrestlers and coaches can trace their lineage back to E.C. Gallagher at OSU (Oklahoma A&M). The remaining ones either to IOWA or Yale.

If there is anyone that is missing or whose lineage is wrong let me know. (Shane Carwin's lineage is wrong. Phil Baroni, Billy Sheridan (Lehigh) Hubert Hub Jack (Lock Haven) are missing right now becuase their lineage cannot be found)

These guys are in the works by the way:
    1. Gerald Harris
    2. Kiguchi (of Kiguchi Combat Wrestling). His students include Gomi and a couple other Japanese star fighters. Apparently he studied for a year at Southern Illinois.
    3. Joe Warren

These guys are not included (harder to find info on DIII guys)
    1. Bobby Lashley
    2. Matt Hamill

Are you looking mainly for the bigger names or some of the smaller name MMA fighters as well?

Some smaller name WEC fighters include Scott Jorgensen (Boise State) and Danny Castillo (Menlo College). Affliction/former IFL fighter LC Davis went to Missouri Valley. Affliction fighter Mike Whitehead wrestled at Missouri. Aaron Stark wrestled at Wisconsin and then fought in the IFL.

Anyone who has graduated from an NCAA Wrestling school and gone on to the Olympics or MMA. Even smaller names may one day become bigger names in MMA. (Danny Hodge is missing but will be added)

In terms of Methodology, the wrestlers are in the tree are linked back by the head coach of the school they graduated from. This is a little harder for D2, D3 and NAIA guys to find info on who their coaches were and what their lineage is.

*If they transferred then the head coach of the school where they graduated is used. Ex: Don Frye went to ASU under Bobby Douglass then OSU with Joe Seay but would be included under Joe Seay. Otherwise the tree would get too complicated.

There are two exceptions. The Granby High School guys (Gray Simmons - Lock Haven) are under Billy Martin and not their college head coach and Kid Yamamoto is under Townsend Saunders since Kid homestayed at Towsend and Trish Saunders house while going to Marcus DeNizia HighSchool. Incidently Townsend fought in the UFC around that time, which is probably what inspired Kid to become a huge MMA star in Japan.

If people realize the impact that wrestling makes on MMA (which is exploding in popularity) and the Olympics then Universities may be less likely to cut Wrestling Programs and people may take a bigger interest in watching college Wrestling to watch the many future MMA prospects.

How about Jim Zaleski, Iowa and Oregon State ?
Life's not the breaths you take, the breathing in and out that gets you through the day ain't what it's all about. It's the moments that take your breath away.

For info on Hub Jack, I'd suggest contacting Gray Simons. Hub was Gray's college coach and close friend.
