Part of the problem with Bobby was everyone knew he would retire - but he kept putting it off. Over and over again and Cael wanted to know when it would happen so he could move forward to the job of head coach. He knew Bono would not get the job over him, just that Bobby would not set a time to retire.
So, offered The Ohio State job he informed ISU of the fact and they acted on it.
Still can't figure out how he could not produce a Team Title with all the talent in the room. At that I congratulate him for doing so at Penn State. He gets a bit better each year in his coaching just as he did on the mat with experience.
He is making things interesting in Collegiate D1 wrestling now and I hope he keeps it up. Would be very interesting to see Penn State get 3 in a row, something attainable with the talent he has.
Bobby was treated shabbily by Iowa State, no doubt about it. What should the AD have done? Maybe get a firm commitment from Bobby on retirement?
Coulda-shoulda-woulda- and Cael is in Pennsylvania anyway.
vs Sajidov- Sajidov beat Sanderson twice, equally slick with better par terre wrestling. I think Sajidov wins again
vs Ketoev- interesting style matchup. Sanderson likes to shoot low and Ketoev likes to stand guys up and work underhooks and body locks. If Ketoev is wrestling his best, I take him by a hair over Sanderson. (That said, he's a head case, and if he's wrestling poorly Sanderson probably pins him.)
vs Mindo- Sanderson already beats him once. Mindo won the Olympics by wearing down his opponents and the worlds by (allegedly) paying off Romero. Neither of those is going to happen vs Sanderson.
vs Sokhiev- Sokhiev tries to stall it out and win on single points. I think Sanderson is able to take him down and wins a close match most times.
vs Ganev- Sanderson is bigger, faster, and doesn't get tired. Ganev gets beaten handily.
Obviously Cael Sanderson hates black people. Thank god Ed Ruth is just REALLY tan.
Jacob Schlottke---Gone too soon, and the world is a little less bright because of it. RIP, brother.
One, two, Evans is coming for you...
I'm taking the Bubba = coaching character comments to be a sign of positive character for Cael.
It takes a strong person to cut loose a possible NCAA champion, but he did it. Why? Well, other than Zapp's theory (truly funny, by the way), what should a coach do with someone who is immensely talented but entirely unmotivated, who then stops going to class to make himself ineligible to force a redshirt year?
How many coaches would have kept him on the team despite all of his crap and his effect on the rest of the team just because he might put it together in a 3-day tournament and get the championship? How many coaches would say that we have team rules and seniors are meant to be positive leaders on the team, and you are not above the rest of the team - goodbye?
Cael did. Troy Sunderland would have. The right move by either guy. In the end, I think it was the right move for Bubba too. He got his for real real.
You forgot to mention that he wouldnt release Bubba to any Big twelve schools when Iowa State needed a 157lber even though Jackson released Cyler to go to Penn St a year earlier.
