VA, in theory...If the Penn St job is better than the Iowa State job, shouldnt the Ohio State job be better too? All those great Ohio recruits and just a hop, skip and a jump away from the motherload of the best adolescent wrestling ever put together on God's green earth in Pennsylvania. Why didn't he just take that job and let Bobby keep his at ISU?

Bobby didnt deserve his fate in all of this, but he accepted it for the good of ISU wrestling. He knew that his time was nearing an end and that Cael was the guy that ISU needed to get them to the next level. I would bet any amount of money that Bobby Douglas, or as I affectionately call him "The Fannypack", would have never stepped down if he knew Cael was going to leave after three years. He would have made Pollard fire him.

Probably at the time Cael really wanted to coach at his alma mater and felt he'd be able to win titles there. A few years of not doing just that and maybe he realized that he would be able to do it easier elsewhere. Maybe he thought his "brand" would have more pull than it wound up being and he wasn't able to get the kids he thought he could.

Also, I can't say I really think the Ohio state job is better than PSU. In a vacuum PA just has more/better wrestlers tie that with equal resources and support with OSU and it's not really a better job.

I was elluding(sp) to Ohio State being a better job than ISU, not PSU. The Ohio State job was vacant at the time, not Penn St's.

I see nothing wrong with Cael's action. He wanted to be a head coach was looking at Ohio and gave his alma mater the oppurtunity to hire him. He did a good job for three years and then he was actively recruited by Penn State, which he saw as a better situation and he wne for that position and it has paid off with a National Championship. Bobby Douglas was pushed out and has reason to be bitter ISU fans even more so, but Cael's a guy with ambition and drive and did not get 4 NCAA championships and Olympic gold by being meek.

    Really no controversy revealed here.

This sums it up pretty well right here. Like ODH says above he didn't force Pollard to do anything, just stated that he wanted a head coaching job.

Don't really see why people (namely a segment of the Iowa fanbase) make such a big deal about this.

You guys are being a bit hard on Sanderson for wanting a head coaching job, but I don't blame Bobby Douglas for being a bit resentful either. Douglas had a few good years left and he's such a class act and great role model.

But the AD, Pollard, is another story. That guy has a big mouth, but his teams can't back it up. His coaches struggle or leave. Pollard should have said "no thank you" to Cael, and wished him success somewhere else.

That's kind of how I saw it as well. I didn't really follow the whole situation, but I thought all this was common knowledge. Business and promotions are always a nasty business and what Cael did wasn't nice, but it wasn't particularly surprising either.

Blatant attempt to hijack the thread: since Cael retired, the following people have won world/Olympic titles at 84: Sajidov, Ketoev, Mindorashvilli, Sokhiev, Ganev. How many of those guys would Sanderson have beaten?
