Big win fore 1-4 Stabile in 3ot-Giorgio and Bennet gave them a fighting chance-UNC just can't get over the hump.

It appears to have been 6-5 Peltier before Giorgio reversed him to his back for the pin. Looks like a wild match!

Very exciting dual overall, though it was marred by some poor refereeing (very few stall calls for guys clearly stalling, very slow on backs, did not control a boxing match that broke out at 174, etc). Shields looked great coming out and nearly majoring a tough Gentry, belying the 1-5 record he brought with him. Kohler nearly followed up one of his best performances against Diaz with a loss. The referee missed a bunch of TD calls, including one chin and wing where Kohler still had his feet in but got called oob. John, Asper and Letts are a difficult trio to overcome, especially in the ACC where they will almost always walk away with two wins and usually three. A total boxing match took place at 174, and it was not ok how uncontrolled Petroski was. This was a 174 compliment to the Dustin Kilgore/Logan Brown bout. He was really winding up on every head slap (Robin Ficker had some fun taunting him). As a D1 athlete he was remarkably unprofessional and warranted a team point deduction (imo). 184 was the match of the night, Peltier riding hard for long stretches to have Giorgio catch him high twice, once for the fall. Ref also missed a call here, he did not award back points to Peltier because he was looking for the defensive fall. Would most likely not have changed the match, but could have. Bennett and Myers both looked dominant. Myers is a big kid, and as a true freshman he will be a bear of a man in a few years.

myers seals terps? first acc victory
True freshman scores major decision to boost Maryland to .500 in conference play
COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Freshman Spencer Myers shut out Ben Brooks via a 12-0 major decision and the University of Maryland wrestling team countered back-to-back North Carolina pin-falls for a 20-18 win Saturday night at the Comcast Pavilion.

The Terps earned their first conference win of the season after falling to No. 23 Virginia Tech 18-17 on Sunday.

?Our guys are wrestling hard and they?re wrestling tough,? said head coach Kerry McCoy. ?They wrestled with intensity and that is exactly what we need to be doing this time of the year.?

With the score tied 6-6 after North Carolina?s Nick Stabile narrowly defeated Ben Dorsay in overtime at 149 pounds, the Terps won the next three bouts in dominant fashion.

From the 157 to 174-pound matches, Maryland?s trio of No. 13 Kyle John, No. 3 Josh Asper and No. 17 mike Letts earned over nine minutes of combined riding time to shoot Maryland to a 16-6 lead. John and Asper each earned decisions over Corey Mock and Thomas Scotton, respectively, while Letts controlled Andre Petroski in a 14-3 major decision.

North Carolina?s Antonio Giorgio and Zac Bennett followed, however, with consecutive pin-falls over Corey Peltier and Christian Boley to give the Tar Heels the 12-point swing and a two-point lead heading into the final match at heavyweight, pitting true freshmen Myers and Brooks against each other.

With the win on the line and the memories of last week?s tough loss in mind, Myers overpowered Brooks from the opening minutes in the first period. After already leading by four, Myers broke loose in the third with an escape, takedown and three-point near-fall to secure the shutout major decision and the Terps? first win in 2011.

?Before I went out, I had last week?s match in my head,? said Myers, who improved to 9-4 in dual bouts. ?I changed a few things up and got the first takedown. [Today] was pretty big.?

Maryland takes nearly a two-week break before resuming conference action Friday, Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Comcast Pavilion against the Virginia Cavaliers.

Can't help but wonder if Ferguson wrestling may have made a difference and Scotten match was really close. Mock was ridden for nearly 3 minutes and Bennet is my choice to win 197-for a freshman he has really improved all year. Kohler had a SW and got the TD late to seal the match against Rappo.
C.D. has tried every line up possible , if Rappo could stay at 33 and Lopes at 141 , IMO, they would be a better team . But all freshman and injured guys make it hard to get through a season.

Kohler did have a stall warning, but it wasn't really stalling. He had both hooks in and Rappo stood up. After ten seconds or so, the ref called stalemate and stalling Kohler. According to the rule, since Rappo stood up with the legs already in (and it wasn't a close call, Kohler had both hooks for at least 15 seconds) it could have been stalling on him, not Jon. If Rappo stood up and then Kohler threw in legs, then it could be stalling on Kohler. The referee probably got this rule confused with the fact that Jon didn't try to return him to the mat promptly.
