Giesen Reaches 100; Stanford Finishes 3-1 at Lone Star Duals
Senior Zack Giesen moved into sixth-place all-time with 100 career victories.
GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas ? Stanford senior Zack Giesen was 4-0, Saturday, as the 23rd-ranked Cardinal wrestling team went 3-1 at the 11th annual Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas. Stanford defeated The Citadel (23-12), Brown (26-12) and Harvard (35-10) to improve to 7-6 overall in dual competition this season. The team?s lone loss came to No. 17 Nebraska (19-17).
Giesen, ranked 10th nationally at 197 pounds, remains undefeated on the season at 13-0, including 9-0 in dual matches. With his 100th career win, the senior becomes just the sixth Stanford wrestler to post 100 or more wins in his career. He is currently sixth all-time in school history and needs just two wins to pass Scott Wiggen (87?) for fifth place.
Four other Cardinal wrestlers were undefeated Saturday ? junior Nick Amuchastegui (3-0), redshirt sophomore Timmy Boone (4-0), sophomore Ryan Mango (4-0) and freshman Dan Scherer (2-0).
The Cardinal started the day with a 23-12 win over The Citadel, winning seven of the 10 bouts. Highlighting the dual was a 16-2 major decision by senior Justin Paulsen over Tyler Sim at 133 pounds and freshman Alan Yen?s 15-6 major decision victory against Luke Johnson at heavyweight. It marked the first career win for Yen at 285 pounds and the fifth win of the season for the rookie. Additionally, Boone and Amuchastegui both pulled out victories in overtime for the Cardinal. Tied 5-5, Boone scored a takedown in the overtime period to pull out a 7-5 win at 149 pounds. Amuchastegui also picked up a takedown in overtime for a 6-4 win at 174 pounds.
Stanford followed up that performance with a 26-12 win over Brown. Again, the Cardinal won seven of the 10 bouts, including major decisions by Mango and Paulsen and a win by forfeit for Giesen. Mango, ranked sixth nationally at 125 pounds, got things started with a 16-5 win over Billy Watterson. Mango secured three takedowns in the first period, two takedowns and an escape in the second and two more takedowns plus riding time in the third. Paulsen scored with six near fall points, three takedowns, an escape and riding time for a 14-1 win over Corte Choate at 133 pounds.
After redshirt freshman Jordan Gray dropped a 4-0 decision at 141 pounds, Stanford reeled off three straight wins to take a 17-3 lead in the dual. Included in the streak were an 8-5 decision by redshirt freshman Kyle Meyer at 157 pounds and a 4-3 decision by true freshman Garrett Schaner over Jeff Lemmer. It marked the first career win for Schaner at 165 pounds.
Stanford forfeited at 174 pounds, but earned the points back as the Bears forfeited at 197 pounds. Freshman Dan Scherer finished the Cardinal scoring with a 2-1 win in overtime over Zach Kulczycki at 184 pounds.
Stanford dropped its third dual of the day as Nebraska edged the Cardinal 19-17 with the teams each winning five bouts. Mango gave Stanford the early 5-0 advantage with a 20-5 technical fall over Shawn Nagel at 125 pounds. Mango posted six takedowns and seven near fall points on the way to his 18th win of the season.
The Huskers took a 6-5 lead with wins at 133 and 141 pounds. However, the Cardinal regained the lead as Boone scraped out a 3-2 decision in overtime over Ross Grande at 149 pounds. Meyer made the score 11-6 with his own overtime victory at 157 pounds. The Monett, Mo., native registered three near fall points during the extra time against the Huskers? Cody Compton.
Nebraska tied the dual at 11-11 as top-ranked Jordan Burroughs posted a 24-7 technical fall win over Schaner at 165 pounds. The Cardinal broke the tie as Amuchastegui tallied a 5-2 decision over Caleb Kolb at 174 pounds. However, the Huskers knotted up the score once again as No. 11 Josh Ihnen edged Stanford sophomore Spence Patrick 2-1 at 184 pounds.
Giesen?s 99th career win, a 10-4 decision over Andy Johnson at 197 pounds, put Stanford up 17-14. Unfortunately, Nebraska?s Tucker Lane, ranked No. 11 at 285 pounds, recorded a 17-2 technical fall over Yen to give the Huskers the victory.
Stanford ended the day with a 35-10 thrashing of Harvard, winning eight of the 10 bouts. Mango once again started things off with a win, posting a 15-4 major decision over Steven Keith at 125 pounds. Mango is now 19-3 overall and 11-1 in dual matches this season.
Paulsen added to the lead with a 9-3 decision over Shay Warren at 133 pounds, while Gray tallied his lone win of the day with a 15-6 major decision at 141 pounds. Stanford led 11-0.
Boone posted the first of three falls for the Cardinal against the Crimson. His pin over Joe Alie in 3:50 at 149 pounds put Stanford up 17-0. Harvard scored its first points at 157 pounds as No. 11 Walter Peppelman recorded a 9-0 decision over Meyer.
Stanford won the next four bouts, including falls by Amuchastegui and Giesen. Amuchastegui?s fourth pin of the year came in 6:15 over Ian Roy at 165 pounds. Giesen?s secured his 10th career pin in just 27 seconds against Bryan Panzano for career win 100.
