Great entry. You're right about them pushing the event. They have been hitting the radio spots pretty hot and heavy around here.

I especially enjoyed the historical elements of today's entry, Jim. The more I learn about how Gary Kurdelmeier hired Dan Gable, the more I'm fascinated by the process.

Iowa Hawkeye fans need to raise their heads heavenward and say, "Thank you, Mr Kurdelmeier*!" He is to Iowa Hawkeye wrestling what Ed Gallagher is to Oklahoma State -- the foundation-builder, the man who made the legacy possible.

    * And I don't mean merely for getting Gable to leave Iowa State for Iowa, either.

    Mark,

Every once in a while I'll meet a Hawkeye fan that doesn't know of Kurdelmeier's legacy. It's a shame.

I've been wondering about that. In fact, as I was writing my response to your blog, I thought, "I wonder how many folks in the stands for the Iowa vs Iowa State dual would be able to tell you who Gary Kurdelmeier was?"

I don't mean this as disrespect to Hawkeye fans. I would ask the same RE Harold Nichols at Hilton Coliseum... or Edward Clark Gallagher at Gallagher-Iba Arena. (In that case, I would not accept the answer "The guy who's name is on this building!" ;-)

All three of these men are giants of college wrestling. Fans should know them.

Thanks for doing your part to help folks know what Gary Kurdelmeier did for the sport, ten years after his untimely passing.

Thanks, GG, for reminding us all that this is one of those sporting events every wrestling fan should see at least once. And this year it's #1 vs. #2!

    Well done.
I got to tell you that although I'm a Gopher/Badger fan, I'm SO happy that a Gable clone is back at Iowa. Tom Brands has made college wrestling exciting.............you have to admit that whether you like him or not........me, I like him. He's given us a team to cheer for .......or against. And he's given us a style that I don't think anyone can possibly be unhappy with. His kids are aggressive and in shape. They never give up. IF they lose, it's generally because time ran out before they caught up.

God Bless you Tom Brands!!!(and to Gable for bringing him back)
