    Release: 01/23/2010
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -– The CSUB wrestling team gave No. 9 Boise State a fight through ten bouts, but with the score tied 17-17 headed into the final match, it was the Broncos’ nationally-ranked 149-pounder who gave his team a 21-17 win in Pac-10 action Saturday.

The Roadrunners fall to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the Pac-10 while Boise State improves to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action.

Competition began at 157 pounds and the Broncos jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead with four consecutive wins. No. 2 Adam Hall earned an 11-3 major decision over CSUB’s Andrew Balch at 157 pounds, Matt Cuthberson decisioned Joey Granata 8-3 at 165 pounds, No. 15 Nate Lee decisioned Trevor Hall 10-7 at 174 pounds and No. 1 Kirk Smith won by major decision, 16-6 over Mike Larson at 184 pounds.

But Bakersfield came storming back with a pair of bigs wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight. The 197-pound match pitted CSUB’s Riley Orozco, ranked No. 1 in the Pac-10, against Matt Casperson, ranked No. 2 in the Pac-10. After a scoreless opening period, Casperson took a 1-0 lead with an escape to start the second, but he would not score again until the final minute of the match as Orozco took over with three takedowns and a pair of escapes to build an 8-1 lead. Casperson scored on an escape with 48 seconds remaining, but got no closer as Orozco took the six-point win.

At heavyweight, No. 13 Mitch Monteiro came alive with offense in his first technical fall win of the season. The Bakersfield senior led just 2-0 in the first period against Sam Zlystra, but an escape, takedown and three-point nearfall in the second stretched that to an 8-0 advantage. He added two takedowns and another three-point nearfall in the third to end the match 16-1 with nine seconds remaining.

Boise State’s No. 13 ranked Alan Bartelli pulled away for a 4-1 decision over Frank Lomas at 125 pounds to push the Bronco lead back to 17-8, but Justin Durham scored six points for CSUB at 133 pounds with a forfeit win. No. 14 ranked Elijah Nacita then pulled out a 1-0 win over Eli Hutchinson at 141 pounds to knot the team score at 17-17, but Boise State’s No. 6 ranked Jason Chamberlain claimed an 18-7 major decision over John Cardenas at 149 pounds to give the Broncos the win.

The Roadrunners head to Atherton for the Menlo Duals on Sunday, taking on host Menlo College, Southern Oregon and UC Davis.
