Stanford Edged By San Francisco State, 18-16
The Cardinal will host Cal Baptist on Feb. 4 at 6 p.m.
STANFORD, Calif. ? The Stanford wrestling team was defeated by San Francisco State, 18-16, Sunday, at Burnham Pavilion. The Cardinal falls to 7-9 on the season, while the Gators improve to 3-8 overall.
Stanford took an early 3-0 lead in the dual as true freshman Dan Scherer pulled out a 5-4 decision over Zach Jimenez. Scherer trailed 4-2 going into the final period and managed an escape and a takedown for the win. The St. Louis native is now 12-10 on the season.
Another true freshman, Alan Yen, put the Cardinal on top 7-0 with a major decision at 197 pounds. Yen defeated the Gators? Karam Basra 13-5 for his sixth win of the season. Yen registered two takedowns in the first period, a reversal to end the second and then two more takedowns and 3:03 of riding time to cap it off.
Stanford appeared to be on a roll as senior heavyweight Dylan Rush posted a 6-2 decision over Otillo ?Anthony? Gonzalez to push the Cardinal lead to 10-0. However, decisions by the Gators at 125 and 133 pounds, and a fall by SFSU?s Naveed Bagheri over freshman Donovan Halpin at 141 pounds gave them the 12-10 advantage.
Redshirt freshman Jordan Gray regained the lead for Stanford with an 8-3 decision over Matt Thomas at 149 pounds. Gray, wrestling up from his normal weight class, led 3-1 entering the third period. He secured two takedowns and 2:47 of riding time in the final period for his sixth win of the season.
Redshirt freshman Sam Umlauf, seeing action for the first time in his collegiate career, extended the Stanford lead to 16-12. Umlauf tallied two takedowns and added 2:35 of riding time to defeat the Gators? Dylan Phillipy, 5-0, at 157 pounds.
Unfortunately, with two bouts left, the Cardinal was unable to hold onto its lead. True freshman Garrett Schaner dropped a 4-3 decision to Isaiah Jimenez at 165 pounds and sophomore Kyler Hasson, also wrestling for the first time this season, fell 4-0 at 174 pounds.
Stanford will return to the mat on Friday, Feb. 4 as it hosts Cal Baptist University. The teams will square off at 6 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.
