AKRON, Ohio – Oklahoma State wrestlers Josh Kindig and Austin Marsden earned fourth-place finishes at this weekend’s ASICS University Nationals in Akron, Ohio.
Kindig, wrestling at 66 kilograms, breezed through his competition in the first three rounds, picking up technical falls over each of his opponents and only giving up one point. The junior fell to Kevin LeValley in the quarterfinals but was not slowed down as he earned tech-falls over two of his opponents in the wrestlebacks and pinned another. Kindig took home fourth place, defaulting with an injury in the third-place bout.
Marsden, who redshirted the 2012-13 season, had similar success in his first four rounds of the 120 kg bracket with three tech falls and a pin. In the semis, Marsden went head-to-head with two-time NCAA Champion, Tony Nelson, who handed him his first loss of the tourney, 3-1. Marsden put himself in position to finish third with his 46 second pin in the wrestlebacks, but was outscored by Nick Gwiazdowski, 7-5, in the third-place match to finish fourth.
Former Cowboy Cayle Byers grabbed a top-eight finish at 96 kilos. Byers got off to a fast start defeating his opponents, 10-0, 12-2, 10-0, respectively. In the quarterfinals, he picked up a 3-2 win over Matt Wilps, but was not also able to keep up as he suffered a 5-2 loss against Micah Burak in the semifinals. Despite losing both of his wrestleback matches, Byers was able to nab sixth-place.
Nolan Boyd and Kyle Crutchmer also represented the Cowboys in Akron.*
