AMES, Iowa - Senior Max Mayfield has been selected to the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division I All-Academic team for the 2012-13 season, the NWCA announced earlier today.
The Davenport, Iowa native, who has already earned a bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University in computer engineering, sported a 3.42 cumulative GPA in the graduate program for business administration this year.
In March, Mayfield was named a member of the 2012-13 Academic All-Big 12 First-Team, marking his first Big 12 academic honor.
In the semifinals at the Big 12 Championships this season, Mayfield punched a ticket to his first career NCAA Championships with a 4-2 upset of No. 16 Nick Lester of Oklahoma. Despite falling to eventual NCAA champion Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State in the finals, Mayfield earned one of two automatic bids at 149 pounds to the national tournament in Des Moines, Iowa with his runner-up finish.
At the annual Cyclone wrestling post-season awards banquet, Mayfield received the Dr. Wise Burroughs Leadership Award. The award is given to the ISU wrestler who best demonstrates leadership to his team and community.*
Mayfield completed his final season 15-15 with seven wins in dual competition. He finished his Cyclone career with a 42-40 overall record.
