Wildcats Recognized for Academic Achievement by NWCA

EVANSTON, Ill. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association released their annual Division I All-Academic Top 30 Teams and Individual All-Academic Team for the 2012-13 wrestling season. The Wildcats rank amongst the top 20 teams in the country for GPA while sophomore Pierce Harger received All-Academic individual honors for the second time in as many seasons.
A two-time NCAA qualifier, Harger ranked second on the team in wins during the 2012-13 campaign with a career-best 26 victories. The Loveland, Ohio native posted a 14-3 record during the dual season, including 5-3 mark against Big Ten foes. Wrestling a competitive schedule at 165 lbs., Harger had a team-high 16 matches against 2013 NCAA qualifiers prior to the national tournament and posted 10 wins in those bouts.
Harger also received NWCA All-Academic Team honors last year and the industrial engineering major is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He was one of 82 athletes and 71 NCAA qualifiers to receive the NWCA honor.
As a team, Northwestern’s GPA during the 2012-13 season ranked amongst the top 20 teams in the country. NU also was one of 10 teams showing up on the All-Academic squad that finished in the top 30 at the 2013 NCAA Championships. Northwestern placed 17th, marking the eighth top-20 finish in the last nine years.
Head coach Drew Pariano's Wildcats are consistently honored by the NWCA for academics as the team has had at least one NWCA All-Academic honoree in nine of the last 10 seasons.
