LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Three members of the Iowa State wrestling team earned FILA All-American honors Saturday at the ASICS FILA Junior Nationals, competing in the freestyle division. True freshman Lelund Weatherspoon led the way, as he was the champion at 79 KG (174 pounds).
Weatherspoon went 5-0 en route to his first-place finish. The Lansing, Mich. native, lost only one period in the entire tournament, coming in his first match against Austin Coburn (Old Dominion). He was dominate, winning 10 of the 11 periods he wrestled.*
In his opening round match with Coburn, Weatherspoon came back after dropping the first period to win the second period 1-0. The final period belonged to Weatherspoon and the the match, as he got the pin with 25 seconds left in the last stanza.
In the championship match, Weatherspoon only needed two periods, as he defeated Jordan Wohlfert (Michigan State) 3-0, 2-1.*
Two more Iowa State wrestlers earned FILA All-American honors in redshirt freshman Logan Molina and true freshman Drake Swarm. Molina took third-place at 74 KG (163 pounds) and Swarm took seventh-place at 55 KG (121.25 pounds).
Molina had one of the more impressive runs in the tournament after dropping his first match, then going 8-0 to take third-place. In the conosolation championship, Molina defeated Zach Brunson (Illinois) 1-0, 1-0.
Swarm went 3-2 en route to his seventh-place finish at 55 KG. In the seventh-place match, the Bettendorf, Iowa native, pinned Gunnar Woodburn (Oklahoma State) with 17 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The annual tournament is open to wrestlers between the ages of 18-20. Five more ISU wrestlers: true freshmen Seth Esaias, Max Krieger, Kyle Larson, Gabe Moreno and Carson Powell also competed.*
