Wrestling Adds to Nationally Ranked Recruiting Class

NC State wrestling head coach Pat Popolizio has announced the signing of seven student-athletes during the spring signing period. The spring signees will combine with seven student-athletes that were signed in the fall, and that were ranked ninth nationally according to theopenmat.com after the fall signing period ended.
“This class is setting the bar very high for the future of our program,” said Popolizio. “We are bringing in a very motivated group of kids that will help us become a perennial powerhouse.”
Here is a look at the Pack’s signees during the spring:
Charles Town, W.Va. • Washington HS
Finished second at the 2013 West Virginia state championships at 160 pounds … West Virginia state champion at 140 pounds in 2011 … Placed third at the 2012 state championships at 145 pounds, and also third in 2010 at 135 pounds … Finished his high school career 188-29, the eighth-most wins in West Virginia history … Placed in the top-12 at the 2013 FloNationals at 152 pounds … Also finished in the top-12 at 152 pounds at the 2012 Super 32.

Burlington, N.C. • Southern Alamance HS
The 2013 North Carolina 4A state champion at 132 pounds, went undefeated with a 53-0 record … Placed third at 2012 state championships at 126 pounds, third in 2011 at 109 pounds, and also third in 2010 at 103 pounds … Finished his high school career with a 178-11 record … Ranked ninth out of 291 academically in his class with a 4.6 GPA … Older brother Joe was the Pack’s starter at 125 pounds, and was a 2013 NCAA qualifier.

A three-time state champion during his high school career … As a senior, finished first at 145 pounds, as a junior won at 152 pounds, and as a sophomore was first at 140 pounds … Recorded 204 career wins during his high school career … Placed fourth at the NHSCA junior nationals at 152 pounds, fourth at NHSCA sophomore nationals at 145 pounds, and second at NHSCA freshman nationals at 140 pounds … A three-time All-Met selection by the Washington Post … Member of the Virginia all-star team at the Dapper Dan Championships … Selected to the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as the Virginia 3A student-athlete of the year.

Jackson, N.J. • Jackson Memorial HS
Placed fifth at 138 pounds at the 2013 New Jersey state championships … Was fourth at 126 pounds at the 2012 state championships, and was also fourth at 103 pounds at the 2012 state championships … Finished his high school career with a 121-25 record … Placed fifth at the 2012 Beast of the East.

Monroe, N.C. • Sun Valley HS
The 2013 North Carolina state 4A champion at 182 pounds, he was 61-1 on the year … Placed third at the 2012 state championships at 182 pounds … Finished his high school career with a record of 185-28 … Placed third at the 2013 FloNationals at 182 pounds, and was sixth in 2012 at 182 pounds.
“Michael has continuously improved and is really starting to hit his stride, he has a tremendous amount of potential. He is a great athlete that has only been wrestling a short time. Once Michael is able to focus on wrestling year-round, he will blossom into a great collegiate wrestler.” - Popolizio

Ranked the No. 67 overall senior recruit nationally by d1collegewrestling.net and No. 77 by intermatwrestle.com … Also a top-100 senior recruit by flowrestling.org … Ranked No. 8 nationally at 170 pounds by intermatwrestle.com and No. 11 nationally by flowrestling.org … 2013 California state champion at 170 pounds … Placed second at the Doc Buchanan Tournament at 170 pounds in 2013 … Finished fifth at the 2012 California state championships at 152 pounds … Brought home a first place finish at the 2012 Las Vegas Freak Show at 170 pounds … Was third at the 2012 Walsh Ironman Tournament at 170 pounds … Was seventh at the 2012 FloNationals at 152 pounds … Placed in the top-12 at 135 pounds at the California state championships in 2011 and was a state qualifier at 125 pounds in 2010.

Durham, N.C. • Northern Durham HS
2013 North Carolina 4A state champion at 152 pounds, posted a 60-1 mark on the season … Placed second at 2012 state championships at 152 pounds and was fifth at 140 pounds in 2011 … Finished his high school career with a record of 185-27 … Sixth place showing at the 2011 Fargo Cadet Freestyle Nationals at 140 pounds in Greco Roman, and eighth at 145 pounds in Freestyle.

The Pack also announced seven signees during the fall signing period, and here is some updated info on those recruits since they finished their high school careers:
Shayne Brady – Won the New York D1 state championship at 182 pounds. Posted a 32-1 record as a senior, and finished with more than 200 career wins.
Brenden Calas – Placed second at the New Jersey state championships at 120 pounds. He was a three-time finalist and two-time state champion. Was 31-3 as a senior, and 112-12 during his career.
Scott DelVecchio – Back-to-back state champion, he went undefeated as both a junior and senior. Finished his high school career 160-10.
Chad Pyke – Finished his high school career 329-19, establishing a new national record for most career wins. As a senior, went 89-2 with 57 pins, and posted 192 career pins. Won the Georgia state championships for the second time. Placed sixth at 152 pounds at FloNationals, and was a two-time Prep Slam champion.
Pete Renda – Was the Pennsylvania 2A state champion at 170 pounds, finishing his senior season a perfect 42-0. Was the 2013 FloNationals champion at 170 pounds.
Max Rohskopf – Finished third at the Ohio state championships for the second time. Was 41-2 as a senior, and 148-21 during his career. Brought home a top-12 finish at 138 pounds at FloNationals.
Chris Wilkes – Was the Missouri state champion at 138 pounds. Was 52-2 as a senior, and 202-9 during his high school career. He was named the Granite City Holiday Tournament’s outstanding wrestler for the second straight year.
