Smith Named Big 12 Coach of the Year

IRVING, Texas -
Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith has been named the Big 12 Coach of the Year, the conference office announced today. The award is Smith's 12th conference coach of the year honor, including his 10th as Big 12 Coach of the Year.
Smith’s all-time coaching record improved to 348-48-6 as OSU blew through its 2012-13 dual competition, securing a 20-1 overall record. The Pokes also assembled a perfect 6-0 mark in conference competition, earning their second-consecutive regular season Big 12 title. Although they enjoyed three weeks as the nation’s top-ranked team, the Cowboys finished as the No. 2 team in the nation after a second-place finish at the NWCA National Duals.
With Smith leading the way, the Pokes picked up their 45th conference team championship — and 14th under Smith — in record-breaking fashion, crowning eight conference champions and posting 118.5 team points.
Smith took all 10 of his starters to the NCAA Championships, where the Cowboys kept the team race close, but eventually fell by four points, taking home a runner-up trophy along with two individual national champions in Chris Perry and Jordan Oliver, as well as five other All-Americans.
During his 22 years at the head of the program, Smith has coaches 82 conference champions, 102 All-Americans and 26 national champions.
