STILLWATER—InterMat announced today that it has selected Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith as the InterMat Coach of the Year.
Smith earned 61 first-place votes from a committee of InterMat writers and executives. *Penn State’s Cael Sanderson was second, earning 43 votes.
Under Smith, the Cowboys finished as the No. 2 dual team in the nation with a 20-1 in dual record and 6-0 mark in conference play. As a team, the Pokes secured a runner-up finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships, a Big 12 team championship and their second-straight regular season conference title.
Smith added eight Big 12 champions, seven All-Americans and two national champions to the record books this season.
Overall, Smith has coached 26 national champions, 102 All-Americans and 82 conference champions. He has lead the program to five NCAA team championships, 14 conference team championships and two regular season conference titles.
This is the second time Smith has received the award, with the first coming in 2006 as the website’s inaugural coach of the year award.
