Three All-Americans, Cyclones Tied For Eighth
DES MOINES, Iowa - Three Cyclones will be standing on the All-America podium Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Sophomore Michael Moreno (165), sophomore Kyven Gadson (197) and senior Matt Gibson (285) all won their first matches in the consolation round at the NCAA Wrestling Championships tonight to clinch All-America status.
Iowa State ended the second day of competition tied with Oregon State for eighth place in the team race at 41 points.
“I’m not as surprised as some people may be,” ISU head coach Kevin Jackson said. “We have been on a steady course this season, getting better and saving our best for last. We have more matches to wrestle and really could have had All-Americans in Boaz Beard and Tanner Weatherman.”
Moreno and Gibson both were dominate from start to finish in their round of 12 matches. Moreno picked up a technical fall 17-2 over No. 12 seed Taylor Massa of Michigan to get the Cyclones off to a winning start in session four. The Urbandale, Iowa, native then defeated the No. 8 seed .
Gibson took a 15-2 decision over No. 11 seed J.T. Felix of Boise State, racking up nearly four minutes of riding time in the match. Gibson gave up a takedown right away and trailed early in the match. He took over about midway through the first period with a five-point move to go up 6-2.
Sixth-seeded Gadson picked up two wins over top-10 seeds in the wrestle backs. In his first match, he trailed 3-2 late to No. 8 seed Micah Burak of Penn. He was able to secure a takedown in the closing seconds to seal a 4-3 victory and advance.
In his second match, Gadson was in control early en route to 12-4 major decision over No. 4 seed Alfonso Hernandez of Wyoming. The Waterloo, Iowa, native racked up 2:14 of riding time in the match.
“Our All-Americans -- Mike Moreno, Kyven Gadsen and Matt Gibson -- have not surprised those of us who have been in the wrestling room this season,” Jackson said. “The future is bright.”
Moreno and Gadson joined their fathers as Cyclone All-Americans. Mike Moreno was an All-American in 1992 finishing, seventh at 134 pounds. The late Willie Gadson was a two-time All-American in 1976 and 1977, finishing third and sixth respectively at 177 pounds.
Gadson and Moreno both are 5-1 so far in their first NCAA tournament appearances. Each posted three wins over top-12 seeded wrestlers.
Gibson, Gadson and Moreno will be back in action tomorrow for session five in hopes to climb higher up the medal stand. ESPNU will televise session five live. Wrestling is set to begin at 10 a.m. (CST) at Wells Fargo Arena.
