DES MOINES, Iowa – Three Wildcats are still competing at the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championships, including a pair of returning All-Americans that advanced to tomorrow’s quarterfinal matches. Top-seeded Jason Welch (157) and No. 5 Mike McMullan (285) secured spots in the quarterfinals for their respective weight classes while Pierce Harger won his consolation match at 165 lbs. during Session II in Des Moines. *
No. 1 seed Jason Welch punched his ticket to the 157 lbs. quarterfinals with a 6-2 win over Scott Winston of Rutgers. After a scoreless first period, Welch started the second down and went up 1-0 with an escape. Winston had accumulated 1:22 of riding time before the Welch escape. Shortly after that, Winston went in on a shot and the Rutgers coaching staff challenged that a takedown should have been awarded but after official review, the score remained at 1-0 in favor of Welch. Winston chose a neutral start for the third period and Welch extended his lead to 3-0 with a takedown. Winston stayed in it, scoring a reversal to pull within one (3-2) and let Welch escape and take the 4-2 lead. With the clock ticking down, Welch added on a final takedown to secure the 6-2 victory.
The Northwestern two-time All-American takes on No. 8 seed Dylan Alton in the quarterfinals. These two wrestled each other twice last season as Welch went 1-1 vs. Alton. The two did not meet during the 2012-13 regular season, but competed against one another in an exhibition match at the 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic that favored Alton.
Fifth-seeded Mike McMullan earned a trip to the 285 lbs. quarterfinals, defeating Big Ten foe, No. 12 seed Adam Chalfant of Indiana, 7-5. McMullan had the 2-1 lead after the opening period, scoring the first takedown. He chose down to begin the second, and extended his lead to 6-1 with a reversal and two nearfall points. McMullan nearly had Chalfant pinned while accumulating backpoints. Chalfant managed to escape eventually, putting the score at 6-2 in favor of McMullan heading into the third. Chalfant started the final period down, escaped and pulled within one (6-5) with a late takedown, but McMullan hung on for the 7-5 victory with 2:19 of riding time.
The NU redshirt sophomore now faces first-time opponent, fourth-seeded Chad Hanke of Oregon State in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. Hanke was the 2013 Pac-12 Champion and utilized his Olympic redshirt last season.
Two-time NCAA qualifier Pierce Harger stayed alive in the 165 wrestleback round with a comeback 6-5 victory over Edinboro’s Johnny Greisheimer. After Greisheimer scored the first takedown, Harger tied things up (2-2) with a reversal. He then trailed 3-2 at the end of the first and 4-2 early in the second after a pair of Edinboro escapes. Once again, Harger knotted things up at 4-4 with a takedown, but Greisheimer escaped to lead 5-4 heading into the third. Harger began the final period down and scored the match-winning reversal with 1:12 remaining. The Edinboro coaches challenged that Greisheimer had another reversal as time expired but no points were awarded as Harger hung on for the 6-5 win.
Harger now meets first-time opponent Zach Toal of Missouri in tomorrow’s second round of wrestlebacks.
A trio of redshirt sophomores saw their trips to the 2013 NCAA Championships come to an end Thursday night. First-time NCAA qualifier Pat Greco’s dropped his consolation bout to Purdue’s Brandon Nelsen at 141 lbs. Greco finished his sophomore campaign with a 14-13 record.
Two-time qualifier Lee Munster went to extra time against Central Michigan’s Craig Kelliher at 174. After a scoreless first, each wrestler traded escapes in the second and third to take the 1-1 tie at the end of regulation. A scoreless sudden victory sent the bout to the tiebreaker. Kelliher began down to start and scored a reversal to go ahead, 3-1. Munster tacked on a quick escape, but couldn’t add on a takedown as Kelliher took the 3-2 tiebreaker win. Munster wrapped up his sophomore campaign with a 24-9 record.
Alex Polizzi and Nebraska’s Caleb Kolb also needed overtime to determine the winner at 197 lbs. Both traded escapes in the second and third periods, forcing sudden victory. Kolb recorded the winning takedown to take the 3-1 win and end Polizzi’s first trip to NCAA’s. The NU wrestler wrapped up his season with a 17-17 record.
