AMES, Iowa - The following is an Iowa State weight-by-weight breakdown of the brackets for the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, March 21-23 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.
141 - Luke Goettl, So., unseeded (15-11)
Opens the tournament against eighth-seeded Nick Dardanes of Minnesota (25-7). Goettl dropped a 3-2 decision to Dardanes in a dual with the Gophers during the 2011-2012 season. Dardanes finished third in the 2013 Big 10 Conference meet. Goettl took second behind No. 1 seed Kendric Maple of Oklahoma at the Big 12 Championships. This is Goettl's second NCAA tournament appearance. Goettl went 1-2 at last year's NCAA Championships in St. Louis, picking up a win by fall (1:40) over Kevin Fanta of Northern Illinois.*
149 - Max Mayfield, Sr., unseeded (14-12)
Opens the tournament against junior Eric Grajales of Michigan (22-7). Grajales, who was the No. 1 seed of the 2013 Big Ten tournament, finished seventh last weekend in Champaign, Ill. He is a three-time NCAA qualifier. Mayfield and Grajales have no previous meetings in their collegiate careers. This is Mayfield's first NCAA tournament appearance.*
165 - Michael Moreno, So., unseeded (26-7)
Opens the tournament against freshman Mark Martin (17-16) of Ohio State. Martin was the No. 9 seed and finished eighth at the Big Ten tournament last weekend. Moreno and Martin have no previous meetings. The winner of this match will face the winner of the match between third-seeded Peter Yates (30-1) of Virginia Tech and Nicholas Visicaro (15-9) of Rutgers. This is Moreno's first NCAA tournament appearance.*
174 - Tanner Weatherman, RFr., unseeded (18-7)
Opens the tournament against 10th-seeded Dan Yates (21-9) of Michigan, who is a three-time NCAA qualifier. The two have not wrestled in college. Yates, a junior, owns a 92-37 career record. Weatherman, who took second at the 2013 Big 12 Championships, will be competing at the national tournament for the first time in his collegiate career next week.*
184 - Boaz Beard, Jr., unseeded (14-7)
Opens the tournament with a pigtail match against Virginia's Stephen Doty (17-10). The Cavalier junior was the ACC runner-up this season at the ACC Championships. Doty will be wrestling in his first NCAA tournament. Beard and Doty have no previous meetings. The winner of this match will take on No. 12 seed Ethen Lofthouse of Iowa. Beard lost a 10-3 decision to Lofthouse Dec. 1 in Iowa City. Beard earned an automatic selection to this year's championship with a second place finish at the Big 12 tournament last week. Beard is a two-time NCAA qualifier.*
197 - Kyven Gadson, So., No. 6 seed (25-2)
In the first round, Gadson will wrestle the winner of the pigtail match between Jace Bennett (30-14) of Cornell and Mario Gonzalez (14-7) of Illinois. Gadson beat Gonzalez 9-5 in the quarterfinals at the 2012 Midlands Championships back in December. The Waterloo, Iowa native has never wrestled Bennett. The winner of Gadson's opening match will wrestle the winner of the first-round encounter between 11th-seeded Blake Rosholt (13-7) of Oklahoma State and Braden Atwood (25-10) of Purdue. Gadson has beaten Rosholt three times this season, including a 5-4 win in the title match at 197 in the 2013 Big 12 Championships. Rosholt will be wrestling in his second NCAA tournament. Gadson beat Atwood, 7-2 at the 2012 Midlands Championships earlier this season. Atwood, a sophomore, is a two-time NCAA qualifier. Gadson will be making his NCAA tournament debut next week in Des Moines.*
HWT - Matt Gibson, Sr., unseeded (17-9)
Gibson opens with a pigtail match against sophomore Adam Fager (18-10) of Utah Valley. It will be the first collegiate meeting between the two wrestlers. The winner of that match will wrestle junior Blake Herrin (26-8) of American in the first round. Gibson will be making his second career NCAA Championships appearance. Last season, Gibson went 2-2 with wins over Blayne Beal (10-7) of UNI and Pete Sturgen (8-0) of Central Michigan.*
