2013 Big Ten Championships Pre-Seeds
EVANSTON, Ill. – Eight Northwestern wrestlers received pre-seeds for the 2013 Big Ten Championships as announced today by the conference. NU returning All-Americans Jason Welch (157) and Mike McMullan (285) each enter the tournament as the No. 2 seed in their respective weight classes.Other pre-seeded Wildcats include sophomore Pierce Harger (No. 6, 165), sophomore Lee Munster (No. 7, 174), sophomore Pat Greco (No. 7 141), true freshman Dominick Malone (No. 8, 125), sophomore Alex Polizzi (No. 9, 197) and sophomore Dylan Marriott (No. 10, 149).
Welch, McMullan, Harger and Munster are returning NCAA qualifiers while the six other NU wrestlers competing this weekend are first-time participants at Big Ten’s.
The pre-seeds, as voted on by the conference’s coaches, rank the top eight wrestlers in five weight classes, along with 11 or 12 schools’ starters in five weight classes due to the Big Ten receiving eight or more NCAA Championships qualifier allocations in those classes. Each team enters the championships with a seeded wrestler in the 165-, 174- and 285-pound weight classes.
Final seeds will be announced following the coaches’ seeding meeting on Friday.
Competition at the 2013 Big Ten Wrestling Championships begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 9 in Champaign, Ill., and concludes Sunday, March 10 with championship matches taking place at 1:30 p.m. For those unable to attend the 2013 Big Ten Championships, watch all the matches live via webstream and tune into the Big Ten Network to catch the finals.*
