COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Colt Sponseller and Nick Heflin, members of the Ohio State wrestling team, advanced to the second round of the 2011 NCAA Championships Thursday afternoon at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Sponseller (165) and Heflin (174) will resume action Thursday night for a place in the quarterfinals.

Penn State leads the field with 20 points. The Nittany Lions are closely followed by Iowa, who has 18 points. Rounding out the Top 3 is Cornell with 16.5 points.

The fifth seed at 165 pounds, Sponseller will face Eren Civan of Columbia next. Civan upset 12th-seed Cody Yohn of Minnesota in the opening round with a 32-second pin. In his final NCAA championships, Sponseller, a native of Glenmont, Ohio, downed Chad Porter of Liberty, 11-3. Sponseller jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the second before scoring a pair of takedowns in the final frame and accumulating a riding time of 3:32. *

In his first NCAA championships appearance, Heflin shut out Matt Demichiel of Navy, 6-0, in a 174-pound matchup. Heflin, the No. 10 seed, used a pair of takedowns, an escape and a riding time of 3:56 to advance to wrestle seventh-seed Nick Amuchastegui of Stanford in the second round.

In his opening-round match, Paddock dropped a 16-8 major decision to Virginia Tech?s Devin Carter at 133 pounds. The Buckeye from Warsaw, N.Y., and Carter were tied, 4-4, at the end of the first period and Paddock held a slim 5-4 edge in the opening seconds of the second, but Carter was able to pull away courtesy of a takedown followed by a 3-point nearfall. Up, 11-6, Carter added two more takedowns and a riding time of 1:22 in the third period to secure the win. Paddock will wrestle Oregon State?s Garrett Drucker in wrestlebacks Thursday evening.

C.J. Magrum also suffered a first-round defeat. Hailing from Oak Harbor, Ohio, Magrum lost, 8-0, to Daniel Rinaldi (Rutgers). Magrum will next face Mike Larson from Missouri in 184-pound wrestleback action.
Wrapping up the first session for the Buckeyes, redshirt-freshman Peter Capone from Johnson City, N.Y., lost a 7-3 match to sixth-seed Micah Burak of Penn at 197 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Burak scored an escape in the second and took that 1-0 lead into the final period. Burak was able to score back points before Capone escaped to make the score 4-1. A takedown by Burak ensued and soon after, Capone scored a reversal to cut the lead to 6-3. However a final escape by Burak sealed the win. Up next for Capone is Ohio?s Erik Schuth.*
