2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships Brackets
MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan sophomore 149-pounder Donnie Corby has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Corby and CMU's three automatic qualifiers--Scotti Sentes (133), Ben Bennett (174) and Jarod Trice (heavyweight)--learned their first-round opponents Wednesday night when the NCAA released the official brackets for the national tournament.
Sentes, who is making his third consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships, is the No. 11 seed at 133 pounds. He will open the tournament against West Virginia redshirt freshman Nathan Pennesi.
At 149 pounds, Corby will make his NCAA Championships debut against No. 4 seed Kyle Dake (Cornell). Dake won the national title at 141 pounds as a true freshman in 2010 and defeated Corby, 6-2, in the season opening dual meet at Cornell in November.
Bennett, making his second straight trip to the national tournament, is the No. 6 seed at 174 pounds. His first-round opponent is Rutgers senior Alex Caruso. Bennett defeated Caruso, 1-0, in the quarterfinals at Midlands in December.
Trice is the No. 2 seed at heavyweight in his third NCAA Championships appearance. He will open the tournament against VMI senior Joshua Wine.
Sentes, Bennett and Trice all are seeking All-America honors for the second time in their careers. Sentes placed seventh at 125 pounds in 2009, while Bennett was sixth at 174 pounds and Trice finished eighth at heavyweight last season.
Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center will host the NCAA Championships March 17-19.
