Grapplers Host Gardner-Webb in Regular Season Finale on Saturday
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Wrestling team will conclude their regular season on Saturday evening at McAlister Field House when they host Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
The Bulldogs will look to rebound after dropping a pair of tough matches in midweek with their final tune-up before SoCon Championships in Boone, N.C. on March 5. The Citadel is 2-1 in duals at home this season.
Scouting The Citadel
The Bulldogs (7-12) are coming off a pair of tough road losses to ACC foes. The Citadel had early leads against both No. 24 NC State and against North Carolina, only to watch both teams comeback. On Tuesday, the Wolfpack defeated the Bulldogs 28-18 and on Wednesday, the Tar Heels stormed back for a tight 19-18 victory. Picking up wins against both teams were junior Richard Alarcon at 125 pounds, redshirt senior Tyler Sim at 133 pounds and redshirt junior Justin Sparrow at 184 pounds.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (6-13-1) are coming into the dual with momentum as they have won four of the last five duals, including a 31-9 drubbing of Davidson of Wednesday on Senior Night in Boiling Springs. They also defeated Campbell, Millersville and Sacred Heart in that stretch, and fell to Liberty. GWU is led by Alex Medved and his 24 wins at 157 pounds. Travis Porter has also enjoyed success this season, going 22-13 at 197 pounds.
The two teams have met in each of the previous five seasons with The Citadel winning all five duals. Last season in Boiling Springs, The Citadel won 29-9. When the two teams met in Charleston two years ago, The Citadel came out on top, 42-3.
Nationally Ranked Bulldog
Turtogtokh Luvsandorj is now 35-7 on the season and ranked in the top 10 nationally of all five major polls (No. 6 by W.I.N, and Amateur Wrestling News, No. 7 by WrestlingReport.com, No. 8 by InterMat, and No. 9 by D1 CollegeWrestling.net). His career record now sits at 61-19 (.763). The sophomore has gone 8-1 against nationally ranked competition this season.
What to Watch
* Pierre Frazile will face Gardner-Webb's leader in wins at 157 pounds on Saturday as he takes on Alex Medved, who is 24-9 this season.
*197 pounds will feature a strong match-up as GWU's Travis Porter who has 22 wins on the season will take on Kelby Smith who has been hot since mid-January, going 8-4 over that stretch.
