WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana University wrestling team ended the 2011 regular season with a sour taste, coming up short against Purdue in West Lafayette by a final score of 21-12. Four Hoosiers were able to post individual bout victories in the losing effort.

Heavyweight Ricky Alcala has made a name for himself in his first season of Big Ten competition. The UC-Davis transfer is ranked ninth nationally in the 285-pound weight class and won seven of eight matches during the conference season. Alcala is also the owner of a 27-7 overall record that includes three wins over ranked opponents.

Justin Brooks was victorious in his third consecutive match, completing his redshirt freshman season with a 4-4 mark in Big Ten action. Brooks' 5-2 decision over Camden Eppert gave IU an early 3-0 lead.

After a Purdue decision and fall in the subsequent pair of bouts, the Boilermakers led 9-3. Kurt Kinser, ranked 12th nationally, stopped the streak at 149 pounds, just missing out on bonus points with a seven-point edge (9-2) over Sam Patacsil.

The pendulum continued to swings at 157 lbs. when a Purdue upset pushed the IU deficit back six points at 12-6. But just as Kinser had, Ryan LeBlanc earned a decision to cut the Hoosier hole in half. The redshirt freshman evened his season record at 9-9, topping Kyle Mosier, 7-3.

Purdue then sent three straight ranked grapplers to the mat, each coming away with W's to secure the dual result.
