Paul Young Tallies 100th Career Win
Feb. 18, 2011
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Four Hoosiers had their hand raised Thursday night in Champaign, including all three nationally-ranked IU wrestlers. Justin Brooks joined #8 Paul Young, #9 Matt Powless and #9 Ricky Alcala in the win category. Overall, #18 Illinois took the dual match, however, by the final tally of 23-12.
Competition started with the 149-pound bout, where IU was missing 12th-ranked Kurt Kinser due to injury. Redshirt sophomore Geno Capezio gave a valiant effort, wrestling up a weight class, in falling to Eric Terrazas via a 4-0 decision.
Young quickly tied things up though at 157 lbs., winning 10-7 behind the strength of four takedowns. The Bloomington, Ind., native added on an escape and the riding time bonus to notch the three-point decision. It marked the 100th win of Young's collegiate career (100-41).
Illinois built a large lead over the next three bouts, racking up 12 team points to go ahead 15-3. The Hoosiers then responded by ripping off three straight victories of their own.
The three-match winning streak started with Powless at 197 pounds. The team leader in overall wins with 32, improved to an impressive 6-1 in Big Ten action. Alcala also moved his conference mark to 6-1 Thursday evening, topping Pat Walker in the second sudden victory period.
In SV2, Walker shot in on Alcala's legs, but the Hoosier blocked it and went back after Walker's ankle. He got one, dragged Walker back toward the center and finished the takedown for a 4-2 victory in overtime, bringing the Hoosiers within 15-9.
The excitement kept coming at 125, where Brooks broke a 2-2 tie with just five seconds remaining in regulation; connecting on a double-leg to take a 4-2 win and cutting the Illinois' lead to 15-12. A pair of ranked Illini were able to turn the tide back in favor of Illinois though, securing the 23-12 triumph after winning the final two matches.
