STILLWATER, Okla. - A pair of Oklahoma State wrestlers were honored for their efforts in lifting the Cowboys to wins over Boise State and Wyoming last weekend. Junior 149-pounder Jamal Parks was tabbed as the national wrestler of the week by USA Wrestling and themat.com and sophomore 133-pounder Jordan Oliver was honored as the Big 12 wrestler of the week.
It was the first career accolade for Parks and it was the third time this season that Oliver has garnered recognition from the conference, as he was previously honored the Big 12 wrestler of the month in November and was the Big 12 wrestler of the week after securing Outstanding Wrestler honors at the National Duals earlier in the season.
Parks beat No. 3 Jason Chamberlain, 3-1, to help the Cowboys to a 28-6 win over No. 8 Boise State last Friday and followed with a 6-1 win over No. 20 Cole Dallaserra in OSU's 34-3 win over Wyoming two days later. Parks' win over Chamberlain was the Bronco's first defeat in 22 matches this season. Chamberlain placed fifth at the 2010 Junior World Championships in freestyle.
Oliver earned his recognition after a 5-2 win over No. 2 Andrew Hochstrasser of Boise State on Friday and a 16-0 technical fall win that was stopped with eight seconds left in the first period against No. 15 Tyler Cox of Wyoming two nights later. The victory over Hochstrasser was Oliver's second over the Bronco superstar this year and though his win over Cox marked the second time this season that Oliver has won by first-period technical fall, it was the first time he did it against a ranked opponent.
The third-ranked Cowboys put a cap on the regular season Sunday when they travel to Norman to clash with Bedlam Series rival No. 8 Oklahoma at 2 p.m. in McCasland Fieldhouse.
