Travis Erdman will compete in his final home matches next weekend against Hofstra and Boston University.
The top-ranked Cornell Big Red wrestling team showed both its strength and depth on Senior Day Saturday, sweeping Princeton 44-0 in the Tigers? Ivy League finale.
The biggest match of the day was contested immediately, as 10th-ranked Frank Perrelli of Cornell took on Princeton?s 18th-ranked Garrett Frey at 125 pounds. Frey had picked up a win over Perrelli during the Bearcat Open in November, but the Cornell senior took the early edge with a first-period takedown.
Frey scored an escape in the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1, but that would be the only point of the middle period. Perelli made up the point with an immediate escape in the third and fought off any takedown attempts the rest of the way. With a 1:31 edge in riding time, Perrelli walked away with a 4-1 win.
That would be the closest match of the afternoon, as the Big Red sent four more wrestlers to the mat ranked sixth or better and each came away with at least a major. Cornell senior Mike Grey, ranked sixth at 133, scored a 19-6 major over Tony Comunale, and Corey Manson followed with a 14-6 major at 141.
Sophomore Kyle Dake, Cornell?s reigning national champion at 141, scored a 19-2 technical fall over Jason Ott at 149, and 11th-ranked D.J. Meagher pinned Daniel Kolodzik in 1:58 to build a 22-0 lead at the midway point of the match.
Following a 12-2 major at 165, both teams forfeited 174 to set up a match between #3 Mack Lewnes and Princeton senior captain Travis Erdman at 184. Lewnes was too much, pinning in 1:49, to open a 32-0 lead. Both Cam Simaz (197) and Stryker Lane (285) followed with pins to give Cornell its final 44-0 margin.
Princeton returns to Dillon Gym next weekend for its regular season finale. The Tigers will take on both Hofstra and Boston University before preparing for the 2011 EIWA Championships.
