Virginia won six matches Saturday, including a pin, two technical falls and a major decision, to defeat NC State in the Atlantic Coast Conference wrestling opener for both teams.
The Cavaliers improved to 12-4 overall with the victory, while the Wolfpack fell to 6-4.
Virginia jumped to a quick 11-0 lead after two matches when Matthew Snyder pinned Pedram Rahmatabadi at 125 pounds and Joseph Spisak won a 15-0 technical fall over Conor Hovis at 133.
NC State won the next three matches to get right back into the match. Darrius Little (19-6) went to sudden victory to defeat Augustus Sako 5-3 at 141 pounds, and true freshman Matt Nereim (8-2) picked up a 12-3 major decision over Derek Valenti at 149. Colton Palmer (22-8) trimmed the Virginia lead to a single point at 11-10 with a 3-1 decision over Shawn Harris at 157.
The Cavaliers won four of the remaining five bouts. Conner Miller took a 3-1 decision from the Wolfpack?s Colin Genthert at 165, and UVa?s Chris Henrich, ranked No. 4 nationally at 174, improved to 20-1 when he handed freshman Nijel Jones a 19-3 technical fall.
Jones originally was in the lineup at 184, but he and regular 174-pounder Quinton Godley switched spots. Godley, a junior wrestling at a weight other than 174 for the first time since 2008-09, moved up to 184 and handed 18th-ranked Jonathan Fausey a 2-1 defeat for NC State?s final points of the match. Godley now is 17-9 overall.
Fourteenth-ranked Michael Salopek won an 11-0 major decision over NC State?s KaRonne Jones at 197, and heavyweight John Danilkowicz defeated the Wolfpack?s Eloheim Palma 4-3.
NC State will return to action next Saturday, Jan. 22, with a doubleheader at Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack will take on Campbell at 4 p.m., followed by a match vs. Ohio University at 7 p.m.
